Hi surrybillgoa
to the best of my knowledge, Intel 965 is not a Motherboard Model. I believe it is an Intel Chipset model which features on various Intel Motherboards. See here:
The Drivers to run most Optical drives are built into most Operating Systems, so additional Drivers are almost never required. Firmware updates can improve the performance of Optical Drives but they can rarely repair serious faults. Your Optical Drive appears to be a discontinued product with archived potential firmware (please read the clear important warnings before downloading and installing any firmware from this site for your drive). See here:

You don't say which Operating System you use, so my answer will be presented in general, Windows terms. If yours is a non-Windows Operating System and my answer seems to be of some relevance to you, please consider applying the logic and principles involved here to your own Operating System and, if in doubt, please feel free to add a Comment or Clarification to this Question. You also don't say if you are using the on-board sound or a separate, dedicated, internal or external Audio/Sound Card. Please include information about the type, model and specification of your computer, its Audio Chip/Sound Card and its Operating System. Doing so helps us makes faster, more accurate and more assured Remote Diagnostics leading to better quality and more useful Advice, Answers, Guidelines , How-Tos and Solutions.
If no Audio Device is showing on your Operating System's desktop, then this is probably a BIOS Settings, Audio Driver or Audio Device Settings problem. Try 2 things first:
Make sure the Audio function in BIOS is 'Enabled' and then save those new BIOS Settings.
To enter BIOS Setup, Press 'F2' or 'Del' during the first POST Screen at Start Up.
Check the status of the Audio Device and the Audio Driver in Device Manager.
Start > (My) Computer > (System Properties) View System Settings > Device Manager
This will tell you if the Audio/Sound Device is installed and functioning properly and if the Audio/Sound Driver is installed properly. If a red 'x' or a yellow question or exclamation mark appears next to the Audio/Sound Device, then there is probably a settings anomaly, fault, error or conflict with the Audio Device and/or its Driver.
AUDIO DEVICE SETTINGS
For your Audio/Sound Device to function properly, it must be set as the Default Device:
Start > Control Panel > (Hardware and Sound) Sounds and Audio Devices > (Manage Audio Devices) Audio > click on the preferred Default Playback device > Apply > OK > restart computer.
AUDIO/SOUND DRIVER PROBLEMS
Re-install the correct Audio/Sound Driver that relates to BOTH the device and your Operating System, then restart the computer. Install the Audio/Sound Driver either from the motherboard's Drivers and utilities CD or from the Intel Driver Download Centre, entering the motherboard's full model number:
If your Operating System is not included in the list of Operating Systems listed on the Intel Support pages for your board, then it is highly probable that no Audio/Sound Drivers exist for that Operating System. If you are committed to both this Motherboard and an unsupported Operating System but all the other Devices and their Drivers are installed and working properly, then consider buying and installing either a basic 5.1 or 7.1, internal PCI Sound Card or an external USB Sound Card that is pre-confirmed as being compatible with your Operating System. Both are inexpensive. See examples here:

The Intel motherboard is a DQ965GF with built in graphics, LAN, sound, and USB. The OS is Windows XP Professional SP3. I have recently installed a EVGA GeForce GTX 460 after the GeForce 7600 I did have blew its caps. In Device Manager there are two instances of "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. Both appear to be loaded i when installing the MB audio drivers. Everything has been checked as you mentioned. I have uninstalled the Intel audio drivers and the NVidia drivers then re-installed the audio which brings up the unknown yellow ? with info that it is looking for internal high definition audio drivers. I then re-installed the NVidia drivers thinking they had the missing drivers. No luck. There is audio from boot up and down but the system will not see any info on an audio CD or DVD on the Optiarc AD-71905. The Optiarc does see data files. Any other thoughts other than it may be a faulty CD\DVD player?
Hi surrybillgoa. Thank you for the additional background information, which was very helpful. Knowing the Motherboard Model and Operating System makes it much easier to give precisely tailored advice. There are 4 distinct issues here (GENERAL DRIVERS / HD AUDIO DRIVER / OPTIARC / GRAPHICS CARD). I will deal with each issue separately. For ease of reference, I recommend that you copy and paste this comment into Notepad, Wordpad or Word and print it out and follow the steps advised on paper. GENERAL DRIVERS ANOMALIES: I don't know where you were downloading Drivers from but, if it wasn't, it should have been from here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchRe... ). Copy and Paste this Official Intel Downloads and Drivers Support Webpage URL (not including the brackets) into your Web Browser and click 'go' or hit 'enter' on your keyboard. I can find no "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio" on this page. The correct HD Audio Driver appears to be an IDT HD Audio Driver. This leads me to suspect that you've been downloading the wrong drivers, possibly from the wrong webpage or even the wrong website (if you have not previously been doing so, always try to download from the manufacturer's official website, rather than independent driver download sites). Save the Intel URL in your Web Browser's Favourites Folder for future reference. Then Remove ALL components of every driver you previously downloaded and installed from Add or Remove Programs. Then you MUST restart the PC. Then, download and install the correct drivers from the above webpage. Then Restart the PC again. Then check Device Manager again for any Device or Device Driver Anomalies. Hopefully this will have resolved your General Driver Anomalies issues. HD AUDIO: Then test the Audio again. If there is still an Audio problem, this might be an Audio Settings issue. Sometimes the Dial Up Modem (unused and unnecessary for Broadband Internet users) or some other Audio-capable Device (such as an MP3/MP4/MP5 Player, Media Player, Skype/VOIP Headset, Earphones or Bluetooth Device, etc.) connected to the PC establishes itself as the Default Audio Device, instead of the Audio Chip. START > CONTROL PANEL > (CATEGORY VIEW) > SOUNDS SPEECH AND AUDIO DEVICES > SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES > AUDIO > Click the Drop Down Menu to the right of the "Sound Playback - Default Device" Option Box > Click IDT HD Audio > Apply > OK > Restart the PC > To keep the issues separate, test the Sound - not by using the Optiarc - but by: MY MUSIC > SAMPLE SOUNDS > Double Click on "Beethoven's Symphony No. 9". Hopefully your HD Audio Driver issue will have been resolved. OPTIARC AD-71905: Test an Audio CD and then a DVD in the Optiarc Drive. If there is no sound > Close Media Player/PowerDVD (or other Playback Application) > Shut Down the PC > Disconnect all the rear cables > Open the PC Case and check if there is a small (often grey coloured), thin, twin, 2-Pin Audio Cable leading from the back of the Optiarc (to the left of the Jumpers) to a 2-Pin 'CD-Audio' Connector near the Audio Chip (towards the back of the Motherboard) that became disconnected when you were changing your Graphics Card > If so, Reconnect this CD Audio Cable > Close the PC Case > Reconnect the rear cables > Power up the PC > Test the Optiarc again, using an Audio CD and a DVD. Hopefully this will have resolved your Optiarc Audio problem. GRAPHICS CARD: If still showing an error in Device Manager, Remove > Restart > Reinstall the NVIDIA Graphics Drivers either from the CD or from the Graphics Card Manufacturer's (NOT NVIDIA's) official Support Website. If you need any further advice, do not hesitate to add a further comment. Rgds. virtual_a
