If a unit is in heating mode the outdoor unit is in cooling mode (outside always does opposite of indoor) after a while if there is a build up of ice on outdoor coil unit stops and puts hot gas through outdoor coil to clear it. The indoor fan stops to avoid and heat loss in area served buy unit once this has been done and indoor unit coil is hot again fan will start. This is the correct operation of the unit to save against bust could and reduced efficiency
If the air conditioner compressor runs all the time the main control board might be defective. The main control board provides the voltage to the fan motor and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.
Hi; I need more info. Do You mean the outdoor unit is stoping and starting while running in a call for heat by the tstat. When heat pumps run if the temperature out side reaches low enough the outside unit will go into a defrost cycle to remove any build up of frost or ice. If the outdoor unit has a dirty coil or a low freon issue this also can trick the unit into a premature defrost cycle. Now here is another scenerio.If Your ac is running in the cool mode and stops prematurly there could be several problems. Low freon level, faulty fan motor causing the compressor to go into a freon bypass mode wich sounds very spewy. Please tell me if you are in heat mode.. Also how old is the unit. Sometimes a severly worn control contactor can disallow all the needed voltage to cross over to Your fan motor and compressor. Watch unit while its acting up... Also when unit goes into a sceduled defrost the fan will stop this is normal and will restart when the unit comes out off defrost You will here this big swoosh sound. Thats the freon being redirected back into the heating path.Let me know...alpharome416
be aware that not repairing this asap that you are causing yourself more problems First I would change out the fan capacitor and see if this could be the problem. Secondly if the capacitor isn,t the problem change out the motor . By continuing to allow the system to cycle like this the compressor will take a dive on you costing more . Good Luck
Capacitor, dirty condencer coil causing the motor amps to run too high. But most likely worn bearing on blade side of motor causing it to pull to one side causing it to over heat and shut down. Sleve bearings should have no side play.
Unit#2 -Sounds like the contacts on the master switch are welded closed or the switch is broken, Replacing the switch should fix this unit. #1 is a little more difficult to diagnose. The compressor is being taken off line by a circuit that protects the compressor from damage either; 1- liquid refrigerant getting back to the compressor which can be caused by something as simple as a clogged return air filter or evaporator coil on a heat pump or 2- overload situation caused by a bad condenser motor or a clogged condenser coil. The first thing you need to do is clean both coils and replace the filter,. Then check to be sure your getting good airflow across both coils. I think it's most likely an airflow issue I hope this resolves the problem GL!
