Betacam SP VTR problem - CVR-75

I have an old Ampex CVR-75. We have a grey stripe that runs down the left 1/3'rd of the screen. Not solid grey, rather a loss of color in the image. I have tried pulling out all the cards and puting them back in again. I cleaned the heads and nothing. Any idea on what would cause this? If it is a card issue, which card should I look at?

Thanks Sanjin! I will have to find an extender board and service manual, everything else I have here. Unfortunately the hours meter is broken as well so I don't know how many hours are on the drum. I will see if I can make those adjustments first.

    Thanks again!

First look under your console there is a timer with display, check T2 and if it is more than 3000h(300x10) you'll have to replace the upper drum. But FIRST;FIRST you need a service manual specially volumen 2 its the same for sony BVW75.
Next you need two extender boards, two channel osciloscop with two probes and if its possibile test tapes. As you described you have problem in luma chain, one of heads is or dead or its signal is too low.You can check it on DM56 board TP3 as I remember and second probe is trigering on TP901.You should get 0,7volts packetes for two heads(DT select to OFF)adjusting for ch-A is RV3,and for ch-B RV4.Step2 is to set DT select to VAR and check 0,7volts on same TP.Adjusting is RV2 for ch-A and RV7 for ch-B.Then go to TP101 on same board and adjust Y AGC output level to 1V with RV101
Same procedure is for the chroma chain TP505 DT select to OFF.Chroma level is 0,6V and adjusting is RV502 for ch-A and RV505 for ch-B.Set DT select to VAR and check 0,6V.Adjusting is RV501 for ch-A and RV504 for ch-B.Then go to TP508 and adjust C AGC output to 1V with RV512.Trigering is TP902

All adjustements are in playback mode with aligment tape CR5-1B PS playing flat field signal
All measurements are with osciloscope
If you can't get those values replace upper drum and try again (you'll need micrometer to center it)
If pockets are not streight (have deformations) you have to do tape run alignment
I repeat NOTHING of these can be done without extender board

Visual distortion when capturing

If you mean by distortion; video wavey look at the top. Your tape guides have moved out of adjustment (the two poles that pull the tape around the head). They are adjusted by screwing them up or down with a tool that looks like a flat screw driver with a slot in middle. Cleaning will not fix this problem. I would recommend you take it to a professional TV/VCR repair shop. It is very difficult to do correctly without proper tools and test signal. Shouldn't cost you more then their basic labor fee.

Sony Beta sp deck 1800 wont take larger tape down

Most likely problem when a Beta SP deck won't take the large tapes is a bad cable in the cassette housing. Replacement isn't too difficult, and the cable only costs about $20.00.

Beatcam SP error message

BVW-75 error 09 is "threading motor time out". Look for something obstructing the travel of the threading ring inside the deck (the ring which pulls the tape around the video head).

Betacam Sp Error Code

It seems mechanical problem and you need to apart unit.
I would advice you to get Maintenance Manual of BVW-75 before to open unit and get help from mechanical exploded section.
Below is picture of Maintenance Manual and part of mechanical exploded view...

It is high end broadcast model and needs care in maintenance.
Good Luck.
