Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Open Question

My computer, a Gateway GT5428, crashed. I tried to turn it on in safemode, but it came back in normal mode with a message that said the newest version of my virus protection had problems, and they were now using an older version. I have Trend Micro and Webboot. Everything seemed to work except one internet jigsaw puzzle and my printer a Canon MP160, which was installed on August 18,2007 and worked fine until now. The computer does not recognize that there had ever been a printer. There is no printer listed when I open "printers". My Start memory lists CanonMP160 and Canon Utilities. Has uninstall. Couldn't do that. Nothing shows under CanonMP160. I have had these error messages at various times during this frustrating time when I tried to get my printer back. 1. Cannot locate a valid definitions file. Please go to the Program Options page and click Update Definitions to download a definitions file. I could not find Program Options in Vista. It must have a different name or be hidden. 2.Before you can print, you need to select a printer. If you need to install a printer either double click the Add Printer icon or click the Find Printer... button located in the General tab of this dialog. I tried both - they didn't work. 3. Window can't open Add printer. the local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine. Under WinZip Extractor got message"MP Drives has not been installed. I tried tuning off the printer and unplugging it for several minutes. No results I tried restarting the computer. The printer did not come back. Is there a fee for this service?

SOURCE: Installing of Printer

I had the same problem and like you couldn't find the solution and was verrrrrrry frustrated. Last night I loaded Vista Service Pack 1 (RC1). THE PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED. If you aren't comfortable loading a "beta" version you will need to wait until the first quarter of 2008.

Our xerox workcentre 4150 is stuck in a self test mode. We have turned off the machine and unplugged it several times, and it keeps going back to the message Please wait....Machine self test in progress....

You will either have to take off the back cover and remove the memory battery. One of those round lithium batteries and reinstall it or go to, download the newest level of firmware and load it to the machine.
You may also want to try turning the machine off. unplugging the hard drive and see if it works like that.If it works without the hard drive replace it. If all those steps do not work replace the main board.

Printer has worked fine until now popup says

If you reboot your computer and the print spooler will not stay running you can go to the HP website and download the newest drivers. You can try to run the software before you unplug but I normally unplug the printer uninstall the printer drivers and software.
Then install the new drivers you downloaded before you plug the printer back into the computer.

try turning off the printer, if it still won't uninstall, boot the computer in safemode (hold down f8 when you turn it on untill you see the boot menu) and try to uninstall it then. just in case, the latest version of your driver is available here:

My dell printer wont turn back

Power down the computer and the printer. Disconnect the printer cable from the computer. Disconnect the power cable on the printer for 30 seconds or so. Without connecting the printer back up to the computer, turn the computer back on as you normally would. It may come back to the screen that asks you if you want to start windows normally or in safe mode. Start windows normally if you do not know how it got to that point. Once windows is started then go back and go through your shutdown procedure and let the computer power down completely. Now reconnect the power to the printer, but not the cable to the computer. The printer should come back on. If it does not come back on standing alone not hooked to your computer then you have a power problem. If it does come back on (powers up). Then turn it back off and reconnect your printer cable back to the computer. Turn the printer back on first, then power your computer back on like before and let it cycle on until you get to your desktop. By this point everything should be on. Let me know how it goes ,but I believe by going through the cycling on and off of both units you'll get back to normal operation. From your posted problem this is the best solution I can give you. God bless.

My epsom driver has crashed my computer.

This can probably be fixed. First, check that your cable coming from your monitor is tightened firmly to the socket on the back of your PC. If need be, remove this, its ok if the PC is still on, and then reattach to the plug and 'firmly' tighten the plug into the socket.

Let me know if this has resolved your problem. If not, proceed with then following paragraphs below.

Shut the PC down cold. Remove the power cord and leave it off for a few minutes. Reattach the power cord. Turn the PC on. While booting press F8 by tapping on that key like a piano key. You will get a Safe Mode boot menu. Should you get a boot source option menu, hit ESC and be prepared to hit F8 immediately to get the Safe Mode boot menu. Choose Safe Mode from this screen, then acknowledge you're booting into Windows by pressing Enter. Once you are in Safe Mode just acknowledge that you are in Safe Mode by pressing OK.

Now, you need to change the display driver refresh rate. Open Control Panel, activate the Display Icon. Click on the Settings Tab and then Advanced button. You want to change the refresh rate at this point. Click on the Adapter Tab and then the button that says List All Modes. Now select this refresh rate 72HZ. Acknowledge (and if given a preview and you have a normal display choose OK or Accept to keep the change) Now, back out by pressing OK every time until you are back to your desktop.

Now, restart your PC normally and see if you get a normal view of your Desktop.

If you do not, or you get confused, let me know by commentting back on your situation by using the Comment Text Entry Area below so I can talk you through a second approach to troubleshooting your problem. OK?

Printer not working Download the newest drivers from here(one of the should work). Uninstall the printer and any software that still may be on the computer. Shutdown the computer and printer. Reboot the computer(with out printer hooked up) and start the new software install. It will tell you when to hook the printerup. Disable any virus protection or spyware programs before you start the install. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
