Question about Logitech Harmony 550 Remote Control
I have the Harmony 550 and using it with the "Next Generation RF remote control extender in my bedroom. I use it with a Panasonic 50' plasma, Onkyo 605 rec., Toshiba HDDVD and Direct TV HD rec. H-200(?). for 2-3 weeks it all worked fine. then for no apparent reason the harmony would not communicate with the RF extender to operate the Direct tv receiver. it works fine with the other components. I have another HD receiver in the Fam. room so I hooked up the RF extender there and the Harmony would not communicate with that one either. I When I remove the transmitter battery out of the Harmony remote and place it in the Direct tv remote it still will not operate the Direct Tv rec. When I put the transmitter in Onkyo remote it works fine. So is it the Next generation RF extender not working with the Direct TV rec? why? thanks Don

1. Remove batteries
2. Hold "2" button down.
3. While holding "2" button down, reinsert batteries
4. Continue to hold "2" button down until remote exits safe mode.

you may need to reprogram your remote, or, if you have your profile setup on the harmony website, reload from there

SOURCE: my harmony is stuck in safe mode
I had the same issue this morning so my apologies for the delay in answering you. After numerous delays and frustrations in being unable to "update" my remote i did the following. First, remove all batteries and disconnect remote from the USB cable. Check ALL buttons to ensure that none are stuck in the down position. I found that my SELECT/OK button was stuck in the "on" position. Continue to check all buttons to make sure all test fine. After doing this hold down the "Off" button while connecting the USB cable, still no batteries in the unit at this time. Hold the "Off" button down for at least 10 seconds or until the units Testing is completed. If the Harmony remote software is up, perform the Update Remote step still sans batteries. After it completes it may perform a self test again (mine did) and after it completes then insert the batteries back into the unit. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Harmony 1000 in safe mode?
The harmony remotes have a built in safe mode, similar to a Windows XP computer. Usually you enter the safe mode on the harmony remotes by taking the battery out, then pressing the power off button and holding while putting the battery in. If you continue to press the power off button, the remote will display safe mode on the screen.
If you are not doing the above procedure and you are still getting the safe mode on the display of the remote, I would try to update the firmware on the remote. And if you have an RF Extender, update the firmware on it at the same time.
Hope this helps,
