Question about GE JVM1870 Microwave Oven

GE JVM1870 Spacemaker Microwave Fan Malfunctioning when Cooking

Fan runs on all speeds when you manually start it off control panel. The fan does not run automatically during the cooking cycle. We have been manually running fan when cooking last couple of days but today, the thermal fuse tripped within the microwave even with the fan started by us and running in manual. Would appreciate understanding on what is wrong with the microwave. Thanks

There are two different fans in this model, as with almost all over the range microwaves.

One is the hood vent exhaust fan, which you can turn on and off at will, and which should always be on when cooking on the stove top.

This fan does not automatically come on when you cook with the microwave.

The fan which should always be on (automatically) when you are microwaving is the internal magnetron cooling fan.

If the cooling fan fails, the magnetron can overheat and the thermal cutout (TCO) / thermostat will open, killing the power to the oven. Ideally, this protects the magnetron from being destroyed.

If the thermal device is a thermostat, it will reset when it cools down, and the oven will work.

If the thermal device is a true thermal fuse, it is a one-time device and if it blows, it will have to be replaced.

If your cooling fan is bad, it needs to be replaced before using the microwave.

Ge spacemaker xl1800 vent fan


I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

I would check the door switches for a faulty switch. If it were condensation on the control panel. I would think it would have dried out by now unless it has damaged the control board.

Have a ge profile spacemaker microwave model# PNM18715M155. The vent fan cmae on while cooking and it wwill not go off. I unplugged and waited 5 min. plugged it back in a the fan still came on.


most likely you have a bad thermal fuse/limit device located behind control panel... there is a small round approx. size of a quarter that has 2 wires attached to it. this device has most likely failed as it is a heat limit and for some reason either the unit got to hot and closed the limit to allow the fan to continue to run or the limit itself has failed... you will have to remove control panel to gain access.... www.sears.com then hit the parts direct link on top and enter your model number to find the part and price ... good luck to you...

Auto-fan turns on too often.


Normally the exhaust / vent / hood fan will come on automatically if the stove top or the bottom plate of the microwave gets too hot.

Also, there may be some settings for the auto-fan that can work like this.

Consult your manual. If you don't have it, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Otherwise, the hood fan thermostat may be failing. It should be normally open when you do a continuity check.

Microwave running although not turned on


Thought I had answered this, but this is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or possibly a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

New microwave; loud fan when heating items


Since you say it's new, it should be under warranty. I would call GE (see your owner's manual) to get a local authorized service center. Then while you're on the phone with the service center, you can start it up and hold the phone close to it to demonstrate to the technician how loud it is. They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty so you get it fixed free.

Hopefully steam didn't get up into it. Apparently it was the heat, but it may be miswired or have a defect in the hood thermostat or on the controller. I always recommend using the hood fan when cooking on the stove top or in the oven but that may have been irrelevant here. I would definitely recommend calling the GE Answer Center at 1-800-626-2005 on this one. If the installation was done correctly, then an exchange may be in order. Early in the warranty, you should be very demanding!
