Trouble Closing Our door will open fine with either the car remotes or the indoor switch.  It won't close with either car remote and will only close by holding down the indoor switch until it's fully closed.  Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike

I have the exact same problem. I was having problems with the remotes working randomly so I changed them out this did not fix the problem. Then I changed out the mother broad and then opening works fine but if I release the indoor button before it completely closes it stops closing and the lights start flashing. Cleaned and adjusted rollers put the old board back in to see if the inside button would work properly, but now the old one works only if I hold the indoor button until the door fully closes but it opens fine.

Check your owner's manual, but I believe this is standard procedure when the safety beam system isn't working for any reason -- the only way to force the door to close is to manually override with the wall button.

Our house had a lightning strike, and after that, the safety beam was not working. Turns out a diode on the controller board got shorted out, making it so that the safety beam devices weren't getting any power.

So I'm guessing either:
- your safety beam devices are not getting power (check for the LEDs to light up)
- they are getting power but are not aligned and hence think there is something in the way (usually they blink in a way when they think there is something in the way, so this is also easy to test)
- they are flaky (unlikely since they are pretty simple devices, but one never knows!)
- the controller board is misinterpreting the signals. (replacing the controller board is expensive, usually. In my case, I was able to quickly find the fried diode, and $2 later, I have a working garage door again!)

Had similar problem. Check the safety beams on both sides of the garage door opener. Check the wiring on the safety beams.

I have a Chamberlain motorlift ML700. The remote works fine for opening the gate, but doesn't close it. Resetting the remote didn't help. Any ideas? Thank you.

My best guess is the closed limit switch is out of range or defective and telling the controls it is already closed.

Lift master formula I will not close, only goes half way down, but fully opens. Worked fine until my wife closed the door on the car, after that it would fully close

I had this problem as well with the door opening just fine but was not closing when using the remotes or when breifly pressing the wall mounted control. The door would close only when using the wired wall mount control. I have experienced this problem with other garage door openers I've had in my previous homes and it was always caused by sensors at the bottom of the door tracks being either misaligned or the lenses were dirty. In this case, and it was just a moment ago today, I simply cleaned the sensor lenses and then the door began to function properly. Give it a try.

It could be the garage door motor that is acting up. Try closing it with the button in the garage. If that's not the case, you may need a different garage door opener.

If the opener feels any resistance it will act like this.Make sure that the rollers on the door to frame are oiled well and turn easily, move in and out easily as well, you can also turn the screw to increase the resistance stop pressure.Oil the rollers well

I have to hold down the wall mounted opener the entire time that the door is closing. The remote will not close the door. They both open the door fine.

Look at the back of the opener, the LED light blinks. Count how many blinks, then go to the troubleshooting guide to find the fault.

Garage Master 1/3 HP 1997 Door Working, not responding to Remote

I have the exact same situation, except my model (139.53607) is older than yours and does not even have an LED. Remotes only works after after shop light goes off (5 minutes or so), but wall button works fine. Did call Sears Service and the tech told me the logic board is probably shot. Don't want to waste money on service call so I'll probably have to buy a completely new unit in the Spring and go through the winter without the use of a remote.
