Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC21 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I GET THE C 31 42 ERROR AND MESSAGE REINSERT THE TAPE. WHEN I RELEASE THE TAPE DOOR THE CASSETTE EJECTS VERY SLOW. WHEN I REINSERT THE TAPE AND CLOSE THE DOOR, SOMETIMES THE TAPE WILL RUN FOR A 4 TO 5 SECONDS AND THE ERROR CODE AND MESSAGE REAPEARS. CANNOT GET THE TAPE TO PLAY. REWINDS SOMETIMES. FAST FORWARDS SOMETIME. ALWAYS RETURNS WITH THE ERROR CODE.

look for a tiny pinhole and insert a pin while powered up to reset the device. if no-go, then the take-up reel needs attention...needs possibly a new or well-cleaned-with-alcohol-swab rubber belt

reel sensor is the problem of your camera it is a common problem to that model, maybe the pinch roller is loosen to the post cause of the lock of that is been broke..that roller is that one that pulling the tape...only a technician can put it back to the mechanism and replace that lock...in sony service they replace the whole assembly and cost a lots...i suggest find other service center for fixing it...hope that roller is not lost in your camera...

SOURCE: reinsert tape message
I got the dreaded reinsert tape message today and i thouht that my video taping days were over. i then made my way to this page and saw this. whack it three or four times and it will work. at first i thought what a load of crap but i tried it anyways... being really mad at the time, i showed my camera no mercy. i took out the tape and gave it 4 hard hits with my palm, put the tape back in and it worked. thanks alot, this works

Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.
