yes it most certainly can, thick oil can block hydrolic lifters and make tappets become loose and even fail. that is a good start point because the next is a worn cam shaft
If the noise still sounds like it's on top, I'd remove the valve covers and check the rocker arms to make sure they aren't broken or worn. Also crank the engine over and observe how far each travels. If any are different, a lifter or lifter and cam have gone bad. If your oil pressure is low or the noise is deep inside the engine, likely you have a crank bearing problem. In most cases it's more economical to get a scrapyard replacement rather than do a rebuild. Before doing anything like that, have an experienced tech listen to it. Only other thing that can make a noise like that is a broken flywheel. A good tech can tell the difference between noises and give you better advice than I can because he can hear it.
If you have a hydraulic lifter that is sticking, sometimes marvel oil or lucas engine additive will help. If the noise is caused by wear at the rocker pivot or the lifter/camshaft, it will not. No chemical can replace a worn part.
Most time a ticking noise is caused by a valve lifter malfunction or a worn pivot on a rocker arm. if the noise appears to be coming from the valve cover (inside) that's usually where the problem is. Depending upon which engine you have the repair procedure will vary. (consult a haynes or chilton manual) Before taking anything apart though many times a lifter noise will respond to a good engine additive like marvel oil or lucas engine conditioner. Neither one will harm the engine and it may quiet it down for you! If you think my answer helped, please rate it. If you have another question or did not understand the answer, just ask.
I would not believe any thing some parts store loser told you. Theres not a V8 built that doesnt have hydraulic lifters, unless its some fancy racin engine. It has hydraulic lifters, but unless you dont change your oil every 5k miles and/or use some cheap oil, there should be no problems. You should have a real mechanic look at it, and verify that you have good oil pressure. If it does, I would change the oil and use some MOBIL 1 and drive it, the oil will clean the lifters somewhat. If the eng has low oil pressure, that will need to be addressed.
It looks like you drove your car with no oil in your engine, unfortunately you should have stopped the moment you started to hear the "rapping noise" since you could have severely damaged your engine. If the noise continues even if you have a normal oil reading you most likely would have to overhaul your engine since by driving it oil dry several parts may have resulted damaged.
Give it a Seafoam treatment - the stuff is available at the auto parts stores and at Walmart. Instructions are on the can - it's an easy procedure that can work wonders on an older engine.
