Question about Sony DAV-X1 System
There is only one thing that you can do as the end-user to try and fix this. Try cleaning the lens on the laser pick-up. Most retail outlets that sell CD or DVD players sell a cleaning disc for about $10 to $15. You put it in the machine and let it run for about 20 to 30 seconds. If the reason your DVD player won't play is because the lens is in need of a cleaning, this will fix it. If the reason is anything else it will not help at all. The most common reason for this failure is a faulty laser pick-up that need to be replaced. This is the most common and usually the most expensive repair because of the cost of the pick-up. It can cost anywhere from $130 all the way up to $200 depending on the labor rates of the shop and how much they mark-up the cost of the pick-up. All shops mark-up the cost of the parts. It is not advisable to do this yourself unless you have some experience with electronics and can do some troubleshooting to verify that the pick-up is indeed bad. It is easy to cause more problems than you started with if not done properly. As I stated above, it is the most common, but it is not the only reason. Other causes of this failure can be as simple as a bad voltage regulator or as difficult as replacing a servo IC. It can also be a memory IC (if it plays CD's but not DVD's), a spindle motor, a bad gear or switch, or one of many other causes. That is why it requires some experience troubleshooting them to nail down the exact cause.
