Will a compaq Presario R3000 take one 2 G memory stick? I am trying to upgrade the memory on my partner's laptop. Can 1 stick of memory, 2GB, be used instead of 2 1 Gigs?

If I remember correctly there is a 2nd memory chip under the keyboard. Just making sure you know that.

Hi there,

According to the HP website, this laptop will only accept a maximum of 1256MB RAM. It claims that it can only accept 1 X 256MB + 1 1GB stick of RAM so I would be safe and not go for the 2GB stick.

Sometimes it can still work but its likely the motherboard will not accept it. Sorry for the bad news!

Try clearing c mos using jumper on mobo or pulling battery on mobo for a min.
Remove memory sticks.
Put battery back in,then memory sticks.

Then try notebook bootup.Set bios to either auto or optimzed setting.

Try upgrading your Bios first, also make sure that the memory that you ar putting in your Laptop is type PC-2700. Other than this, I know that this comptuer has a 2G limit and should have no problem with it.

What OS are you running? 768 should be enough to run XP and keep you from getting that error message. On laptops their are normally just 2 slots for ram, so you would need to replace the 256 with the 512, which would bring you up to a gig of ram. Do you know if your computer has any spyware/adware on it? Sometimes malware can take up all your memory and generate just such an error. Do you know how many processes are running when you first login? Thank you.

Page 43 of this manual seems to have the best documentation on memory for this machine. I saw a 2GB max in another document and this shows the biggest module as 1GB. I would believe that infers a pair.
