To remove the starter from your Big Twin, first disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the oil from the primary. Remove the outer primary cover and take the small bolt out of the starter jackshaft. You don't necessarily have to remove the starter gear and the jackshaft but you may be able to work it out without moving the clutch assembly out. If you want to move the clutch assembly out, take the snap ring out of the clutch adjuster screw plate in the front of the assembly. Inside the hole is the mainshaft nut. It has LEFT-HANDED THREADS. You can get the nut off if you have an air wrench or a primary locking bar to keep the engine from turning while trying to get the nut off. The nut torques to 60-80 foot pounds of torque. Once you get the nut off, you can slide the clutch assembly outwards enough to get the starter jackshaft and gear off without having to remove the primary chain or the engine sprocket.
Go to the other side of the bike and take part or all of the exhaust system off to allow you to get the starter out. In the case of a Softail, remove the top bolts and the rubber supports that hold the oil tank in. You do not have to disconnect any of the hoses. All you need to do it to raise the tank just a bit to get to bolts that hold the starter on and to get it out. Take the nut off that that connects the battery cable to the starter and unplug the small single wire from the back of the starter. The nut is a 14mm nut. Take the two large socket head bolts out that holds the starter on and remove the starter. There is a coupling that connects the starter to the jackshaft. Mark the coupling which way it goes or remember that the counter bored end goes toward the jackshaft.
If you want an exploded view of the starter and jackshaft, visit

and look up your bike or one close as the starters are the same.

Good Luck
Steve

How to replace a starter on a 92 evo softtail heritage

Disconnect the Battery, so theres no power. Find the replacement starter, remove the bad starter(remembering the wiring) and replace with new starter. You can also check youtube channels for DIYers, and most harleys are about the same. Thats what i do when i have trouble on my bike. or just take it to a local HD mechanic.

Starter stay on without pushing button

It sounds as if the starter solenoid is stuck or siezed keeping the starter's gear in contact with the flywheel. The starter solenoid needs to be repaired soon or the starer motor will be damaged.

The starter on my 1999 Harley softtail Evolution motor just spins when I hit the button. It doesnt connect with the moter.

Sounds like the starter clutch may have gone bad. The outer primary cover will have to come off if the clutch went out on you. The job is much is easier if the oil tank is also removed.

I have a 2002 flh. the starter engages and starts to spin then slows down and acts as if the battery is weak. i have tried it with other batteries and does the same thing. i think it is the starter but not...

The removal of the starter from your Road King is exactly the same as it is on the Softails. I'd take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house and ask them to check the battery. I've seen a lot of these starters replaced but never for acting like that. They all had some other problem. Make absolutely sure it's not you battery or the cables before replacing the starter. I could be an expensive mistake.

Where can I find a diagram of the jackshaft and the starter for a 96 Harley heritage softtail

http://www.shopronniesharleydavidson.com/harleydavidsonparts.htm
Start at the above link. Its basically a microfiche of the harley motorcycles. You'll need to select 1996 and heritage softtail etc but you should be able to find what you want. I used a similar for my suzuki and you can print etc and better than some of the manuals!!!

Starter makes grinding noise.... Can you help me? 1997 heritage softtail.

The first thing I'd check is the jackshaft and the ring gear on the outer clutch hub. Disconnect the battery. Drain and remove the outer primary. Inspect the ring gear and jackshaft looking for "roughness" on the teeth of the two gears of broken teeth. If you find any, you'll have to replace the parts.

If those parts look good, your problem is probably the "starter clutch" inside the starter. This is the one way bearing type device that allows your starter to turn the engine over but then freewheels the starter once the engine does start. This part can be replaced without having to purchase an entire starter but you'll have to disassemble the starter to replace it.

How do I replace the starter on 2001 softail,

As always I recommend you obtain a service manual, it will show you step by step how to do everything.

Removing the starter from a softtail can be a pain.

You have to remove the inner and outer primarys to get at the bolts holding the starter. This will require a couple special tools (Harly Davidson) to remove the clutch assembly and output drive. You may want to visit a mechanic for this one. Or like I said get a manual, you will be glad you did.
