Western Digital My Book Premium Edition II problems....help!

Well....for just about a month now, I have been using the WD My Book PE 2. This Sunday as it was about to take its usual backup of my hardisks, no communication was possible to get from it! When I checked the My Book Raid Manager, it said under status: BAD!?. When I tried a bit later, no device was found!? Now I have tried to reinstall it, but without any luck....tried to go to the "add new hardware"(after I have installed the included disc of course..)...and nothing!?

I have been having some issues with it from the get go. In the beginning it wouldn`t operate if I used it through my firewire connection, while I had another device plugged in my second firewire connection(yes- I have 2). So after struggeling with that, I gave in to the USB way of connection. A bit slower yes, but did at least what it was supposed to do. And now suddenly...no response!? ;-(

Anyone have any tips or useful info about this? If so, I surely could need it! ;)

Worked fine when I shut down my PC (Vista Ultimate) and the next morning when I started up, the drive was recognized but Windows says it needs to be formatted. I plugged it into an XP machine and it can't read it saying the data is currupt. I contacted WD and they say nothing can be done exept expensive data recovery. Does anyone have another solution I can try without sending it off for thousands of dollars of recovery? Since this is a two-disc RAID 0 configuration, the data is "striped" which somehow makes recovery very difficult, but maybe someone can help? Thanks!

Does it make any clicking/clunking sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php?
If yes - it's really bad.
If not - then try to remove it from enclosure and connect directly to a PC.

WD HD Media player damaged my hard drive??

Hi Dear! This problem could be solved through a software. You should use Western Digital Disk Manager, your WD hard disk will work properly after using that your WD hard disk pass all test of the software. When it will pass all test it will work properly and in other condition if it will not pass then you should try again so that the software will fix the error and it will made workable.
Thank You

You could try recycling to see if they give you anything for scrap. I'm sorry to say that it would be worth nothing any other way.

Hi stuhubbard. "joul" posted this fix in response to my WD issues. Check it out....

I had the same problem today and I solved it...
Go to the Western Digital official website, choose your model and download the driver for win98..it works magically with XP. Fast and easy :)

My WD fixed itself, but this seems like a likely fix if you are still having problems. Perhaps let "joul" know if this is useful for you.

My book premium edition ii and windows vista

I am running 4 WD SATA drive internally on Vista Ultimate, and no problem. I have a simpletech USB 360gb external drive that I had not used after the VISTA install. After reading your problem, I hooked it up and turned it on, and it worked just fine. However, the computer forums are FULL of folks complaining about the My Book drives. WD site shows extra drivers for Win98 (as expected) and nothing for VISTA (would not think you would need one)

I would disconnect the MY BOOK. Get the PC running on its internal drives. Remove any MY BOOK drivers (they are likely for Win98). Reboot the PC. Connect the MY BOOK drive to a usb port and turn it on. If it doesn't come up as an external drive, I would think there was something wrong with it and contact Western Digital. You SHOULD NOT require VISTA drivers for any USB device. My warranty experience with WD has always been outstanding. Hope this helps

PROBLEMS WITH MY WD BOOK

Hi, This post might be of some help/idea... http://www.fixya.com/support/t191153-device_recognized The only difference is your model uses Western Digital and not Seagate. Yours can still be recognized but Windows consider it non-formatted. First try a data recovery software and another storage medium where you can copy the files if you're successful in the recovery. Good luck and kind regards.

WD Western Digital mybook premium edition

Google is your friend... I found the WD website and browsed for the model you said. I found the installation guide and looked it over. You might want to do the same. You can also contact the company via the website to either download the software or order it from them Product page: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/extmatrix.asp Guide: http://www.wdc.com/en/library/dual-option/2079-001072.pdf
