This should apply to other brands and models... the original problem: bad hard disk, need to restore from win 7 image disks however The portage m200 lacks an optical drive and cannot be booted from usb (only options are to boot from LAN or from a specially created SD card).
Solution: you will need a second pc that can boot from an on board or peripheral optical drive. Swap the second pc's hard drive for the one that you are restoring. Now boot the second pc from the restore disk and follow the onscreen instructions. Once completed the pc will try to reboot and you will get an error about how windows couldn't repair start-up. Now power down and swap the hard drive back to the portage. You should now be up and running, much easier than trying to create a boot-able sd image or boot from a PXE server.
Try hitting F8 during startup and choose last known good configuration. Or you could try starting in safe mode and doing a system restore. Have you made any changes to the system prior to this problem, as sometimes installing programs/drivers can cause similar issues. If so you will need to remove or configure the program causing the conflict. You can do this in safe mode.
If your computer is still under warranty you can contact the Toshiba support site and order recovery media. They will refer you to the company that sells them. The cost is about 45 dollars + taxes. Even if your computer is no longer under warranty you may still be able to obtain the recovery medias.
Failing that, you may consider buying a retail version of the Windows Operating system and install it on the computer. Some custom buttons may not work, and you will have to go to the Toshiba support web site to download the drivers for your computer. Before buying a version of Windows, check the Toshiba site for your computer and your intented OS (WinXP 32/64, Vista 32/64, or Win 7 32/64) )to see if they have drivers.

This is resolved by installing Intel Storage Manager drivers through "F6" option on XP Setup. YOU MUST HAVE AN EXTERNAL FLOPPY DISK (A Drive)...as the Portege doesn't come with one...and XP does not support USB or CD ROM for this particular function.
I am not sure how youve manage to connect these 2 items. You did not specify whic Portage you have, but even the most recent only has SXGA video port. The Apple cinema display connector is ADC. APPLE DISPLAY CONNECTOR. No computers on the planet have this port except for apple's. It's basically a modified DVI connector. In order for you to use this monitor with your computer, you would have to purchase a DVI to ADC connector , which is another APPLE only item and selld for $100 new. You would then have to purchase a SXGA to DVI adaptor...It sounds like a costly endeavor, and with a connections your Portage's onboard video card , amynot even support the resolution for this monitor.
