12 Answers

My thanks to ghappliances for his quick response. I received several others within minutes and I am now trying to figure out how to see them.

My problem has to do with the F1 error code on a Whirlpool Cabrio WTW6600SW0 washing machine.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Thanks, elemirac. I'll look into the water pressure, although I have seen reports elsewhere that, on this model, F1 refers to a primary control failure.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Coolguy008, your response corroborates what I have seen elsewhere. What exactly in the machine control assembly? Why is a technician required?

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

    RonnieH49,

    I check it out. Thanks.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Does anyone have a part number for this machine control assembly?

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

    leethedeuce,

Yes, I want to do this myself, unless I can figure out how to get Whirlpool to do it for free. It does not seem like something like this should occur on a two-year old washer.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

mohammed387, it looks like you are addressing a range error code, not a washer code.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Got mine at BestBuy, not Sears.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Are any other parts, besides the control board, required? Can anyone confirm that the original board has been superceded by a new part number?

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

mohammed387, the link to the pdf did not work for me.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

Thanks to all of you. I'll rate the solution that works when the problem is fixed.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

The links suggested do not reference the Cabrio. Thanks.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

So far, it looks like my best course of action may be to call, 1-877-922-2880 to consult on the matter. They have the control unit assembly in stock and offer a lifetime warranty for less than $40. The part was about $150. More than I'd like to spend, but probably worth it not to have to call out an authorized repairman every year or so.

Some suggest that this is a big problem with the Cabrio. Maybe it is for the 159 who have signed to petition about it; perhaps not a big enough deal for a recall. If I don't get satisfaction otherwise from Whirlpool, I may sign the petition.

In the meantime, my family has been checked out on how to perform as many resets as are necessary to wash a load of clothes.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

800-659-7026 is for the Sears recall; does not apply to my situation.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

I do not think FixYa is intended to be some kind of legal forum. Comments about petitions and class action lawsuits do not appropriately respond to my questions.

  • WQ5X Sep 15, 2008

I did not clearly see my specific model number there. Do they offer free technical advice (with a purchase) and a lifetime warranty (for a few dollars more?). I am all for spending less. Just need to know more.

  • WQ5X Sep 16, 2008

Thanks. I have unplugged the machine for at least a minute but still get the error. Have not checked the connectors yet.

  • WQ5X Sep 16, 2008

I will have the control unit replaced. Whirlpool is providing the circuit board free of charge. There will be a service charge for installation. Yes, I could do it myself, but not for just the price of a service call. The latest part number, per Whirlpool and their authorized service company here, is now W10189966. This is the third substituted part number for this board in about two years. This suggests to me that the design may not be final, although I am sure Whirlpool hopes that it is. My speculation regarding the Kenmore recall is that it is available because of a contractual arrangement between Sears and Whirlpool, wisely negotiated by Sears to protect their service objectives and brand integrity. That Whirlpool has not issued their own recall may be an indicator of some uncertainty regarding the finality of the latest solution. On the otherhand, the succession of part numbers substituted for the original tells me that they are working on the problem. I would not write off Whirlpool yet.

Regarding FixYa, I have to say that the responses of its experts and gurus failed to lead me to the solution I was able to craft myself, quite painlessly, with Whirlpool and their local service provider. That is not to say that the FixYa service is without merit. I was impressed my the immediacy and volume of responses generated, and suspect that for more common appliance problems, they could have been very beneficial. It just did not work out that way this time.

By the way, I'll keep my old control assembly as a backup. I know it works to some extent.

  • WQ5X Sep 16, 2008

Whirlpool told me that there would be no warranty on the part itself. The machine is two years old, so out of warranty. I'll confirm the part warranty situation with the service provider, although Whirlpool is replacing the part at no cost out of warranty anyway, so that's kind of like having a part warranty. We'll see.

  • WQ5X Sep 16, 2008

You're right. I guess I have to accept one of these solutions to bring this to an end. It might as well be yours. Many of you reported the meaning of the F1 code, corroborating what I had seen on other websites. Thanks to you and all, well most, of the others who responded.

  • Anonymous Mar 20, 2014

I noticed my loads can take anywhere from 90 minutes to over 2 hours for a load that was set for a 59 minute wash/rinse. I have also noticed that when the sensing light is lit up, it can keep the time from decreasing in my cycle time. I have been hitting the pause/resume feature and that seems to do the trick until the next time the sensing button lights up. I have already unplugged my machine for an hour to reset it, but to no avail. Thanks for considering to help me.

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!

The best I could find by scouring the internet was that it was a communication problem between the central control unit and the electronic control box. I was getting F1 codes that would stop the wash, then diagnostics showed F68 and F41 codes.
Sears wanted to charge $65 just to come out and diagnose it themselves, and these appliance sites wanted to charge their own fees to offer solutions. So I took a chance and ordered a new electronic control box ($146.00 + S&H) and installed it myself.
There are three long screws behind the control unit "hood", in the back-top of the washer, facing straight up and down. After unscrewing, I lifted up the hood up and forward, and there was a black box - the electronic control. First, you should check all the wires and make sure the connections are ok. If that still doesn't fix it, unplug all the wires, and take the electronic control out by unscrewing one 1/4" bolt. Put the new one in and re-wire everything (it shows what wires go where on the electronic control box - named by colors). No more error codes!

This washer is only a year and a half old as well, I guess it will pobably be my last Kenmore/Whirlp

I called Whirlpool and went through the ringer with the customer sercive representative that told me there is not a recall on the model of Cabrio that I have... after she told me that Whirlpool new it was a common issue with that washer. I told her that I thought it was ridiculous that the company would not stand behind their product and asked to speak with a manager. The customer service rep returned to the phone (not the manager) and told me her manager said they would send the part to me free of charge but would not cover the tech coming to fix it. So a few days later I rec'd the part and took the top cover off the washer and replaced it myself - there are several wires that have to be disconnected and reconnected so I would not advise doing this yourself unless you are pretty handy with that type of thing. However, I did it myself and haven't had a problem since.

Sir i understand your frustration. Unplug the machine for one minute... plug it back in... if you still get the error it does indicate an electrical problem. you would need to check the connectors to make sure they are seated properly

Hi there,

looks like you already have a solution here but i figured that i'd put my two cents in as well.

check out http://www.servicematters.com/docs/wiring/wiring_main.htm
the above website will give you all the information that you need regarding error code, just type in your model #

and also www.whirlpoolparts.ca
this website will give you the exploded view of the machine itself, including part #'s.

and yes, you are correct, it looks like the main control board is the culprit here and you should have a technician replace it because you need to warranty to carry on on part itself.

good luck,
c

this is the part number you will be needing (Part W10104830) control assemberley

  • chris07551 Sep 15, 2008

this is questions and ansewrs from ppl
Same F1 deal here. I thought this interesting... The technician came out today and replaced the

Control Unit Assembly (Part W10104830) with a "revised" Control Unit Assembly (Part W10201186 Rev A).

It was the opinion of the technician that the original part contained a
known defect (or defects); hence a new "revised" replacement part. Part
    cost 143.74.

Whirlpool should PAY for this part!!!

  • chris07551 Sep 15, 2008

First off I hope you have a Sears unit and second you did not pay a
penny. Your F 1 error is a Primary control failure. Part W10104830 and
one other do F1 and a oL code.

If you own a Sears machine you qualify for a recall under sf26-779B.

There is two parts to this call the board and a washplate

    MCU part # W10201186

    Washplate # W10077050

Recall will need your name and phone number and the machine model and serial number.

  • chris07551 Sep 16, 2008

hi there like i said f1 is is a primary control failure. Replace the machine control assembly other wise turning it off and on aint gonna help at all the part is about 150 even like you said now there is no quick fix over the net or in this conversation that part has to be replaced at the end of the day. doesent matter how long its off or resetted that is a fault and wont fix its self im starting to thinkl people are giving up on this question mainly beacuse we all no for a fact it is that and if you dont replace it there is no other fix

please replace it ,it will work fine again
    thankyou from chris

  • chris07551 Sep 16, 2008

well if you have a new control assembly on its way that's good it will be fixed but all of us did steer you in the right direction exactly what the error code meant,
now i also told you it was the assembly , and i gave you advise of course its that kind of problem we cannot fix this over the net this time , the unit you have is a known fault ,it has been recalled and sent back to the manufactorer this problem might come back so be a aware this question is still visable to us it will go away once you have rated some one as a fixya ,,,,,,I HOPE TO YOU THE BEST THAT YOU FIX IT I NO THIS IS A PAIN FOR YOU AND A MUCK AROUND THAT YOU DONT NEED ,
i hope you have a wonderful day and god be with you
    thankyou from chris

F1 touch pad / ERC test

    This simple test will
help determine whether the ERC (Electronic Range Control or Clock) or the
touch pad is defective when F1 error code is present.

Note: Some models incorporate the touch pad in to the ERC as a single
assembly, in which case this test is not necessary. Simply replace the ERC
    (Clock).

Warning: If you feel in any way uncomfortable performing this test or
making this repair, please contact a qualified appliance repair
    technician.

    1. Disconnect power to the range (unplug the range power cord or turn the
power off to the range at the circuit breaker). It is very important that
the power to the range has been disconnected, so please double check
    before continuing.

    2. Gain access inside the control panel.

    3. Disconnect the touch pad (also called keypad or membrane switch) ribbon
    from the ERC.

    4. Make sure there are no lose wires, or anything else that may cause a
short when power is turned back on. Assemble the control panel back the
    way it was.

    5. Turn the power back on.

    6. Wait for at least one hour to see if the F1 code comes back (usually
    accompanied by a beeping sound).

    7. If F1 comes back, replace the ERC. If it does not, replace the touch
    pad.

Hello,
F1 code means that there's not enough water pressure, sou you should first check your water hose. If this doesn't fix it, please ask me again.

I telephoned Whirlpool at 1-800-253-1301. Whirlpool acknowledged the F1 fault and will send a serviceman, free parts and labor, to correct the problem concerning the "famous" F1 fault. This is even for washers out of warranty! This concerns model WTW6600SW2 washers. Be sure to get the authorization code from them so the service person cannot argue about costs.

F1 Alarm @ rinse cycle

F1 code = Primary Control Failure. Replace the machine/motor control assembly. If you use a screw driver in front of the machine to open the top you will find a repair manual on the inside of the front panel. or depending on the model, you can even unscrew the bottom and find the manual. The manual inside is actually meant for technicians. It contains the error codes and instructions related to them.will be looking forward for your comments if there is any further problem in this.

I get an F1 error code at the start of the wash & at rinse cycle.

Your Central Control Unit is most likely the problem. It is the main board in the machine behind the control panel and they have been failing a lot. This is a major problem with the Whirlpool Cabrio and the Kenmore Oasis machines. You will most likely need to call a service technician. People have also called whirlpool and complained and got them to pay for the part. I suggest you try battling with them. The part is faulty.
