Question about Whirlpool LSR5132J Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Washer doesn't spin or drain

I read an earlier question posted here and checked the lid switch, but it appears to be operational. The washer fills and agitates, but when it reaches the point where it should drain, it just stops. There is nothing. No sound, no humming, no nothing. It's like it just turns off at that point. I tried manually advancing the timer, but it still just sat there. Any idea what it could be? I can replace parts easily enough but I don't have any idea what to replace or where to find it.

Thanks,

Thanks, Mohamed. I checked the timer and tried to test the spin cycle in other programs, but nothing happened. It just seems to stop when it reaches the spin cycle. I was thinking maybe it was the pump?

  • Paul Atchison Sep 15, 2008

Yes. Everything else seems to work fine. The washer fills, goes through the wash cycle, and when it reaches the point where the washer would drain and spin for the rinse cycle, or any other part where it would drain and spin, it just seems to turn off. No noise what so ever coming from the machine. It doesn't drain or spin.

  • Paul Atchison Sep 15, 2008

No I havent. But only because I really don't know where to look. Can you point me in the direction of the pump? I will go check it out. And how would I know there were anything stuck in the pump? Broken wiring is more obvious.

    Thanks!

Washer wont spin or drain

Yes, you can check the LID switch as it needs to activate the program to move forward. If the water fills up and there is no wash cycle, check if the motor hums, if so check the capacitor, check the friction on the spindle/drum. If the spindle does not agitate with movement the assembly must be reset.

Our washer wont fill with water and the controls seem to be stuck on drain and spin. no matter what we do it wont fill and wash clothes.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If your washer doesn't drain or spin, you may read and learn what parts may cause this. First, you will want to check your water pump. You need to make sure it is working. Make sure you check the belt on the pump. Make sure it is not broken or loose. Also, make sure your pulley is not stuck in place. Sometimes, they will stick or barely turn at all. If this is the case, you will need to replace it. If the pump, pulley, and belt are working, make sure your motor is working. You should be able to hear it if it is. If it isn't, check your lid switch. The lid switch can cause the motor to not work. It may need adjusted. If not, go ahead and change it. A bad lid switch may cause the washer to not work at all. Now, if your pump is pumping and the washer still won't spin, you will want to check your belt and clutch. Once again, the belt may be broke or loose. Check to make sure your clutch is not worn also. This may be a case of a bad lid switch again as well. You could have a bad drive motor. This is what controls spinning, draining, and agitation. You could have a broken motor coupler. Over time, they will go bad and need replaced. It is possible that your transmission is slipping or damaged. And lastly, you could have a bad basket drive ir spin bearing. This is what allows the inner tub to move. If this is the case, you will probably hear loud sounds or loud banging. I want to thank you for reading and I hope this helps you. Best regards and thanks for reading

if the washer will not fill I would change the water inlet valve. this could be the problem for all other issues. if the machine has no water in it, likely the timer will not advance to wash.

Does not agitate or spin - fills and drains - checked belt & pulleys seems fine

Hello
Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,

The washer is equipped with a lid switch failure detector. If the lid switch
should malfunction, the detector will stop operations for your safety.

Read below

First, turn the control dial to proper cycle and pull dial out to start the washer. If
equipped with buttons, be sure they are fully depressed.
Close lid and pull dial out to start the washer. For your safety, washer will
not agitate or spin unless the lid is closed.
The washer is equipped with a lid switch failure detector. If the lid switch
should malfunction, the detector will stop operations for your safety. Call for
service.
Pauses are normal. Wait and see if the washer will start again.

Please remember to leave a rating before you go!

Okay...I'm a little confused on your symptoms. You initially said it fills, but doesn't agitate or spin, but drains.

Then, you finished with the washer filling, no agitate or spin, but now doesn't drain.

Which one is it?

The symptoms you describe are usually associated with the following:

1. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin or drain - lid switch.
2. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin, but still drains - motor coupling.
3. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin or spins slow - gear case.
4. Fills, agitates, spins, but does not drain – water pump.

NOTE: These are the more common failure items with these symptoms.

Double check the lid switch by opening and closing the lid. You should hear a clicking noise to indicate the switch is working. The switch is located under the top panel along the wash tub rim on the right-hand side. If not, check to make sure the lid strike (small plastic piece on the lid itself) is in place. This activates the lid switch when the lid is closed. Also, check the mounting screws along the rim (there are two of them) to see if they are tight.

If the motor coupling were bad, the washer would still drain, but there would be a rattling sound as the washer tries to spin or agitate.

If you need replacement parts, go to searspartsdirect.com and type in your model number in the "Search by Model Number" window. The lid switch can be found under the "Top and Cabinet" heading as item number 11 (part #3949238). Instructions on how to replace are located at the following link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-replacing_lid_switch_whirlpool_top

If you wish to replace the motor coupling, the part can be found under the “Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump” heading as item number 13 (part #285753A). If you need instructions on how to replace, just follow this link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Now, there’s a couple of ways to drain the washer. If it’s a simple lid switch problem, you don’t need to drain the washer to replace the switch. With a broken switch repaired, the washer will run and drain by itself. However, if you wish to drain the tub you can use a shop vac to pull a vacuum on the drain hose. This may take a few times depending on the size of the shop vac. These wash tubs typically have about a 35 gallon capacity. If you do not own a shop vac, you can by-pass the lid switch by jumpering the two BLACK wires at the lid switch connector that is connected to the console. CAUTION: Make sure you UNPLUG the washer before jumpering, then plug back in.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If I’m wrong about the symptoms, please post back and update me on what the washer is or is not doing, so I can assist you further.

Washer will fill and agitate but won't drain and spin

Tweetly, no spin, no drain, usually a sign of a broken lid switch. Also check the switch actuator on the lid. Lid switch part number 3949238. Check that out first and post back. Catriver.

No spin

Cowboy, make sure the lid switch is operational. If it is and you can get it to spin in the test mode but not in the regular cycle, sounds like a control board issue to me. Catriver..post back.
