Question about Philips 51PW9363 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Open Question

Convergence problem I have a phillips model 51pw9363 rear projection hd ready tv with a convergence problem. The picture looks like you're watching a 3d movie without the glasses, for lack of a better description. I need to know how to fix this. Does anyone know the part number(s) for the convergence IC units and what else I would need to do the job myself? I'm a fairly competent PC repair guy, but not so much with TV's. Thanks

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Hello, I have a 60" Phillips rear projection TV

It sounds like a convergence problem; depending on your skills it may or may not be something you can do (parts cost on EBAY will be under twenty dollars).

I will attach some convergence photos: does your set look anything like these?

If it does and you can solder etc I can tell you the best place to get the parts and how to do it.

Before you rate this information let me know what you find.

I see double pictures on top and bottom

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

My Philips 51PW9363 looks like someone is pinching the screen in the middle from the top and bottom. No color, sound or other problems that I've noticed.

You will need two STK392-120 Convergence ICs and about 4 6.8 ohm 1watt resistors. You can get replacement ICs and resistors at the following link and they provide free instalation instructions with pictures so you can do the job yourself. Here is the link.

sounds like the Convergence ICs are getting ready to go. Does it appear as a outline almost 3D? If so its convergence if its more like a glowing halo its coolant in the blue CRT that needs changing.

No power to tv

You say didn't do anything, Like did you hear a squealing sound or did you see led lights on front of panel or just dead nothing? If dead and nothing then look for fuse blown in power supply if not then there maybe a small sound coming out of set when you press power if so then the power supply is trying to start up then you will have to look elsewhere like horizontal or convergence or vertical areas.
