Kenmore Washer/Dryer Combo Unit Cord Issue

I have a five year old Kenmore Washer/Dryer Combo Unit. I recently moved to an apartment where the outlet is brand new-it has four prongs. My washer/dryer has a three prong cord. I purchased a new dryer cord with four prongs to replace the the three prong cord with. My question is how do I prevent the dryer from drawing too much power from the outlet terminal given that it will be going from three prongs to four? I was told there is a certain way I have connect the new cord to prevent this and risk of fire.

Thank you.

Click here for more info on the electrical connections from a 3 to prong.
I would suggest to check with the superintendent of the building first before hooking the appliance. That way you will know if the wiring will be able to handle the amount of power require to operate the appliance.

There is always at least one [usually more] that say to connect both green wires together. The green wire that is already on the dryer[not the one from the cord] is connected to the center neutral connection but it is connected on the back side of the block. This is why the picture show you to connect it to the same post as the neutral from the cord.Basically you just made it loop from one point on the neutral to another point on the same neutral and this disables it without removing it[saves it for future use if the dryer is move to a 3 prong outlet] If you were to connect the two green wires you would be bonding the ground and the neutral together. This would defeat the whole purpose of the fourth wire. You are trying to separate the ground and neutral because the neutral is returning power back to the panel for the 120 volt controls and the ground is a safety that should not have power on it unless there is a short in the system[which would trip the breaker]

We moved our Kenmore stacked washer/dryer from downstairs to upstairs - now it will not work. any ideas?

If the dryer didn't get banged around or damaged when you moved it, it sounds like it might be a power issue. Is the outlet where the dryer plugged into controlled by a switch? If so, make sure the switch is on. Is it on an electrical circuit with any other large devices (air conditioning unit, refrigerator, etc.)? If so, the dryer probably isn't getting enough power. Try plugging it in somewhere else, on a different circuit (using an extension cord to test it, if you don't want to move it until you're sure) to see if that makes a difference.

Check for obstructions in the pump and discharge hose. Check the motor coupler. Here is a video that should help.

Longer cord/age of washer & dryer

Is your dryer electric with the big plug.
If so, what kind of changes are you making?
The dryer needs to be by the vent outlet so you can't move it far unless you are going to cut a new venting outlet.
If it is electric (not gas) then do not try to extend the cord. Have a licensed electrician move the electrical jack.
The cord has a large amount of current running through it and the longer the cord, the more resistance the current has to flow through. More resistance means more heating of the cord and less voltage for your dryer. This can result in the cord overheating to the point of melting and starting a fire itself or getting hot enough to ignite the very fine and very dry lint particles that are present in any laundry room.

This is a situation where you spend the money and have it done professionally because of the danger of fire, death, etc.

Good Luck!
