The printer scan button wouldn't work for me either. I had to install the HP Solution Center software from CD onto my Windows Vista PC then I use its scan document software button to do any scanning.
If the disc was for xp it won't work in vista you need a vista disc or run it in compatable mode and see if it works, it should or go to hp.com and download the correct driver for the printer when using vista. This is free at hp.com
I would uninstall the drivers and reinstall them. Be sure to keep the scanner disconnected from the computer until the software prompts you to plug it in.
Afterwards I would go to the HP site and download the updated drivers.
The drivers might only work on windows Xp or earlier, so go to this link http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=441240&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us and choose you vista system and download the driver, and then save and install it and it should work.
