Question about HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer

Grey background over entire page.

I get a light grey background on all pages when printing from our 2600n. And recently it also started leaving a 3" blue streak down the middle of the page.
On July 28th trina5901 posted a similar problem, with the solution of not printing labels. I do not print labels. This happens on regular paper - every single page, every single time.

    We did recently change the cartridges and they are remanufactured. And the problem did start happening after we installed these, but not right away.
    I am wondering (and now hoping since I've ordered a replacement) if the problem is with the electrostatic transfer belt. We noticed that it looked "dusty" when the problem was only with the grey background on the white paper, but now there is also a large cyan swath down the middle of it that is transferring onto the paper as well.
    If this does not solve the problem, we'll try new original cartidges. Any other suggestions and thoughts are more than welcome!

    I too have the same problem with a gray background covering my entire pages when I print. Lately, I have noticed that some blackish-gray lines appear on the left side of each page that I print. This printer started out doing fine, but we have been ordering non-HP brand cartridges lately. I am very dissatisfied with this printer at this time.

    I replaced all the toner cartridges, but with remanufactured ones because that's what was on hand. Then I got very bright magenta covering everything! I put the old magenta back in and have a slight background tinge. No more blue streak though.
    I think once I get original hp toner cartridges and replace the remanufactured that the problem will be solved.
    Seems like a lot of problems get blamed on the printer when they are caused by remanufactured cartridges. It will be only originals for me from now on!

    Are the cartridges recently changed ?

    Are they originals, or remanufactured (these cartridges are not easy to get RIGHT when remanufactured, and there are so-called remanufacturers that just re-fill, sometimes not even emptying the wast toner (and it's a very small wast toner hopper in these !

    Both faults could be cartridge related.

    Can you borrow a black and or cyan cartridge from anyone to try - see if the problem remains with these - if not that's your answer

If toner is getting onto the transfer belt, it can only get there by either being put there intentionally, or leaking.

Failure of Transfer Belt is normally degraded print quality - usually poor density, or a failure of the support behind the belt (usually puncturing the belt), and scoring a drum.

Printer has light grey background after printing

Hi Mel:
Just a thought, is there a "greyscale" setting?
When I try to print I have the choice of Black & White, colour, and greyscale.

Whatever I print looks "dirty",

If the cartridges are not HP brand, that may be the problem.

Try to figure out exactly what color the "grey" background color is.
If it is truly grey, the black cartridge might be the problem.

You can also try a different type of paper.
Some paper may respond to the printing process differently than others.

If you find that the background is a red, the scanner will have to be removed and cleaned.
These models have a tendency to collect red (magenta) toner on the scanner assembly lenses.

I'm printing on 110 lb card stock and the toner gets crispy..and actually flakes off on the edges and sometimes leaves smears and clumps of black or burnt toner on the paper. It prints fine on 20 lb paper...

could be the fuser but there is a setting for heavy paper or card stock which will slow it down and increase the heat. depends on your model as to where this can be changed.

HP 2600 is printing with a grey background. I have done several recalibrations and cleaned it but it does not fix the problem.

same as me, I got reduce this effect printing in normal paper as if i where printing transparency paper. The background is lighter now, but still appears.
The other thing I test, printing a blank page it was that with a glosy photo paper with the gloss side to the back i dont get any background. So i suspect it has to do with the tansfer belt ETB rollers.

HP 2600n grey background

Most Original cartridges are starter cartridges that hold only 1/3-3/4 ink. Drum maybe defective, and this usually causes the grey or black in your printing. Cartridges may need replacement along with the drum. Hopefully this helps

it seems very important to shake the toner before using your printer.
it is not too late
remove all toners and shake them well
you will find after a short time that the grey background goes away

Sounds like you're probably running compatible cartridges. I sell a fair number of these cartridges to my customers, and it took a while to find a brand that actually worked. If you're seeing toner all over the place, the cartridges are most definitely the problem.

Grey shades coming all over the page as well in top back side of paper.

The Developer unit needs to be replaced. It gives background over entire page. If the printer is under 3 years old and is original unit (developer unit) you can get a new one free from Kyocera.
