Having a problem with Beryl on Ubuntu, I play a video no problems, but if I rotate the cube the video disappears or starts flickering.

Sounds like a graphics card problem. Are you running it on a laptop?

  • albertoj May 11, 2010

What are your computers specs? Maybe it's because your video card just can't take it.

  • life4himsq May 11, 2010

Are you using the restricted video drivers? Also, what video card do you have? ATI, Nvidia or Intel?

Usually when the video of an app starts to mess up, that means either the video card you have in the computer isn't up to the standards for the app.

Or your having RAM issues. You may need to install more ram so the app can actually work without flaws.

Sure, linux is designed to take the best performance of what it has to work with. However some apps are designed specifically for top of the line systems.

To enable a cube desktop in Linux, you must have Compiz installed. Open a terminal and type in

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

When prompted, enter your password. When it is finished installing, go to the "System" menu, then go to "Prefences" then go to "Advanced Desktop Effects" and check the box next to "Rotate Cube".

How to Make Ubuntu Play MP3 Files

Because of licensing issues, Ubuntu is unable to play MP3s out of the box. We’ll show you how to play MP3s and other restricted file formats in about four mouse clicks.
The philosophy behind Ubuntu is that software should be free and accessible to all. Whether MP3 and other file formats are free is unclear in many countries, so Ubuntu does not include software to read these file formats by default.
musicplayer_001.png Fortunately, it does include a package that installs the most commonly used file formats all at once, including a Flash plugin for Firefox.
Note: These instructions are for Ubuntu 10.04. There are small differences for earlier versions of Ubuntu.
Play MP3 Files
Open the Ubuntu Software Center, found in the Applications menu.
sshot28.png
Click on View and ensure that All Software is selected.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_001.png Type “restricted extras” into the search box at the top-right. Find the Ubuntu restricted extras package and click Install.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_002.png Enter your password when prompted.
authenticate_003.png Once the install is complete, close out of Ubuntu Software Center, and you’ll be able to play MP3 files! To confirm this, we’ll open up Rhythmbox, found in the Sound & Video section of the Applications menu.
sshot116.png Our test MP3 plays with no problems!
Note: If Rhythmbox tells you that MP3 plugins are not installed, close Rhythmbox and reopen it. You should not have to install anything extra through Rhythmbox.

Despite this extra step, playing the most common audio and video file formats – including Flash videos on the internet – is simple. All the software comes installed, you just have to teach them how to read your files.

Watching live tv the screen flickers all the time, if you move the mouse the flickering will stop for a few seconds then start again. I just replaced the tv card hopping this would solve the problen but...

Each computer that has a video card has software that comes with that card. The exact program is going to depend on the exact model # of your computer and the type of video card that you have - if you tell me the model # and video card information, I can get more specific with you. Unless you have disabled it, most video card software loads on startup - double-check your taskbar on the lower right-hand side of your computer screen, and see if one of the items says something about graphics (my video card software, for instance, is Intel Extreme Graphics 2). Open up that program, and change the "refresh rate" to 60 Hz, and see if the flickering disappears. In your case, the TV card that you have might have its own software that will allow you to change the refresh rate.

There is another possible alternative if you are having trouble finding your video card software. On the Windows desktop: Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Appearances and Themes --> Display --> Settings --> Advanced --> Monitor --> change the refresh rate to 60 Hz.

60 Hz works in most cases. Double check the documentation for your TV card software, because it may reccomend another number.

If you tell me the video card software that you have, and the manufacturer and the model # of your TV card, I may be able to get more specific, but I think this at least has a chance of solving the problem.

When you start your pc just after it listed your hardware, before starting the grub graphic of Ubuntu, press the esc key, and change your kernel using the arrow on your keyboard, to the previous kernel, as fare as i remember one the kernel was having a bug, just before i upgraded to Ubuntu intrepid 8.10, if you did not do the full upgrade, then go to http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/ and search for the latest kernel, my best advice is go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and follow the steps base on your Ubuntu os, any problem come back to me richardicare@googlemail.com

No sound in ultimate 1.8

I had the same issue - I had system sounds but video/movies and music apps would not play sound.

This resolved it for me. I use OSS (open sound system) This command lets you choose your default sound system, so therefore the apps within Ubuntu know what to use to play sounds. =]

goto a terimal and type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base

Choose your sound system - By default for Ubuntu it is ALSA

Ubuntu dvd problem

You can use VLC instead (videolan.org). It includes the libdvdcss library that will allow you to play even content-scrambled dvds. Or if you'd like to do it the Ubuntu way, you can check this page. It has all the instructions you need to play DVDs.
