Sounds like a graphics card problem. Are you running it on a laptop?

  • albertoj May 11, 2010

What are your computers specs? Maybe it's because your video card just can't take it.

  • life4himsq May 11, 2010

Are you using the restricted video drivers? Also, what video card do you have? ATI, Nvidia or Intel?

Usually when the video of an app starts to mess up, that means either the video card you have in the computer isn't up to the standards for the app.

Or your having RAM issues. You may need to install more ram so the app can actually work without flaws.

Sure, linux is designed to take the best performance of what it has to work with. However some apps are designed specifically for top of the line systems.

To enable a cube desktop in Linux, you must have Compiz installed. Open a terminal and type in

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

When prompted, enter your password. When it is finished installing, go to the "System" menu, then go to "Prefences" then go to "Advanced Desktop Effects" and check the box next to "Rotate Cube".

How to Make Ubuntu Play MP3 Files

Because of licensing issues, Ubuntu is unable to play MP3s out of the box. We’ll show you how to play MP3s and other restricted file formats in about four mouse clicks.
The philosophy behind Ubuntu is that software should be free and accessible to all. Whether MP3 and other file formats are free is unclear in many countries, so Ubuntu does not include software to read these file formats by default.
musicplayer_001.png Fortunately, it does include a package that installs the most commonly used file formats all at once, including a Flash plugin for Firefox.
Note: These instructions are for Ubuntu 10.04. There are small differences for earlier versions of Ubuntu.
Play MP3 Files
Open the Ubuntu Software Center, found in the Applications menu.
sshot28.png
Click on View and ensure that All Software is selected.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_001.png Type “restricted extras” into the search box at the top-right. Find the Ubuntu restricted extras package and click Install.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_002.png Enter your password when prompted.
authenticate_003.png Once the install is complete, close out of Ubuntu Software Center, and you’ll be able to play MP3 files! To confirm this, we’ll open up Rhythmbox, found in the Sound & Video section of the Applications menu.
sshot116.png Our test MP3 plays with no problems!
Note: If Rhythmbox tells you that MP3 plugins are not installed, close Rhythmbox and reopen it. You should not have to install anything extra through Rhythmbox.

Despite this extra step, playing the most common audio and video file formats – including Flash videos on the internet – is simple. All the software comes installed, you just have to teach them how to read your files.

Video noise at the botom of screen

If you are familiar with equipment, and are a sort of general handyman around your house, you should be able to solve this.
Open the Top cover of your VCR, and hit PLAY. Watch the Tape guides load the Tape around the spinning Video Drum. The Right Guide post should go fully till the end. If it is not, then apply some grease or lubricating Oil along the Guide path. Hit play again. The guide should now go fully.

If the problem persists, the take a narrow flat screw driver, and rotate the Right side Guide post Anti clockwise for around 45 degrees. Observe is the Tracking Noise is now disappeared?

I just installed ubuntu installed mp3 kodec

When you start your pc just after it listed your hardware, before starting the grub graphic of Ubuntu, press the esc key, and change your kernel using the arrow on your keyboard, to the previous kernel, as fare as i remember one the kernel was having a bug, just before i upgraded to Ubuntu intrepid 8.10, if you did not do the full upgrade, then go to http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/ and search for the latest kernel, my best advice is go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and follow the steps base on your Ubuntu os, any problem come back to me richardicare@googlemail.com

No sound in ultimate 1.8

I had the same issue - I had system sounds but video/movies and music apps would not play sound.

This resolved it for me. I use OSS (open sound system) This command lets you choose your default sound system, so therefore the apps within Ubuntu know what to use to play sounds. =]

goto a terimal and type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base

Choose your sound system - By default for Ubuntu it is ALSA

G'luck

Monitor flickring

  1. Flickering screen display

Flickering on the screen can be caused by defective hardware in the computer or by improperly installed software, but it can also be caused by interference from external devices. The following examples describe situations in which your screen could start flickering:
    • Screen starts flickering because of interference caused by devices which generate magnetic fields, for instance:
      • a TV set
      • a laser printer
      • another monitor
      • fluorescent lights
      • hidden power lines
    • Apart from interference, an incorrect setting in your system CMOS setup can also cause flickering. On some systems it is possible to distinguish between interlaced and non-interlaced monitors. The setup of your system should always be colour non-interlaced.
    • Proximity to the monitor of fans, air-conditioning units or other devices with rotating motors.
    • The number of devices using power from the same electrical line. Are you overloading the plug?
    • Monitor placed on an unstable surface.
    • Improper video drivers, this is a software problem, see section B
    • An improperly configured or a defective video card.

  2. Reinstalling the video drivers

    1. Start the computer.
    2. Click Start, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
    3. Double-click the System icon.
    4. Select the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window.
    5. Make sure that View devices by type is selected and locate Display adapters and Monitor in the list.
    6. Click the plus sign (+) in front of both items to get a list of installed devices.
    7. You need to remove every device by highlighting it and clicking the Remove button and OK when the warning message appears.
    8. After doing so for both items, they should disappear from the list.
    9. Close the Device Manager by clicking OK, and you will return to the Control Panel.
    10. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
    11. Click Next, select Yes when it asks "Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?", and click Next twice to start searching for new hardware.
    12. This will take a few minutes and, after it is finished, you will have to restart the computer. Windows 95 or higher will automatically set up the correct monitor and video drivers.
    13. If the screen is still flickering, click Start, select Settings, and click Control Panel.
    14. Double-click the Display icon and select the Refresh tab.
    15. Change the Monitor Refresh Rates until the flickering disappears.
    16. If the flickering remains, go to step C.

  3. Troubleshooting

    1. If it is possible, connect a different monitor to the computer. If the flickering disappears, it is a fair indication that the monitor is defective, otherwise go to the next step.
    2. Set up the computer and the monitor on a different place in your house. If the flickering disappears now, it is most likely an interference caused by something in the original location. Check for devices which can cause interference.
    3. If the flickering persists, check the setup of your system. If available in the setup, make sure that the option Monitor Type is configured as Colour Non-Interlaced.
