Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

I just drop my WD external hard disk (Please help)

Hi experts,

I have a Western Digital MyBook 500GB and I just drop it on the floor from my coffee table accidently. When I tried plugging in MyBook, MyBook lighted up but it doesn't appear in My Computer. It seems like MyBook cannot be detected by my laptop. Is there a way to repair MyBook or at least recover my data?

Thank you.

I had the exact same thing happen last week. My Book fell off of the mini-tower onto the floor. About a foot and 1/2 drop and when I plug it in now it shows up in device manager as the WD External USB device but it does not show up in Windows with a drive letter. Everytime I plug it in, it tries to spin up 3 or 4 times then just stops. I can hear the hard drive spinning and trying to start. Help!!!

When you drop your hard drive for more than a few inches, you just have to face the fact that the HD is dead, period. If for some miracle the drive still works, then it's the work of Jesus/Shiva/whatever deity of your choice. I'm sorry I can't offer anything more constructive. See Myth 24 on this page:

Put the drive in your frig for one week, roll the drive with newspapers in a plastic bag.
after one week plug it to your computer, if you are able to get access to your drive, transfer everything from the drive to your computer. do not take too large file, do it little by little. if the drive get overheat it will stop working again.

hope this work for you, but after that you will need to buy a new drive.

if when plug to computer and the drive dont start it mean that the drive circuit board is damaged, try to get another same circuit board and replace it

Then it\'s a waste of a mass-storage device...mine is WD-brand as well 2 TB...great for keeping heaps & heaps of TV Series, movies, music clips, videos, games and so forth...similarly there is no recognition by the Desktop PC, but I see the little white light blinking constantly on the drive...hmmm if only I was a computer hardware wizard!

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

WD 500GB MyBook stopped mounting on MacBook Pro

Have you tried it in another computer? I think these kind of problems can sometimes be caused by USB voltage problems, especially if your MBP has an old battery (I believe the battery is used as a power buffer to keep size of transformer down). If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with the same HDD power supply and try switching that over. Failing that it's data recovery, you may be able to do this yourself by switching the actual hard drive into a new enclosure.

WD5000MT not recognized

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

Mybook of 500GB has a strange noise in disk

If it's making a clicking, rattling, or "leaking" (like the sound of air whistling out of a balloon) then the drive may be damaged and it's time to contact Western Digital support.
