I have just bought a Digihome pvr320sd tv recorder with freeview, can i set it up as a tv recorder only without the freeview as i already have built in freeview on my tv.

When you set up the recorder Freeview stations will be stored. This means that you can record TV stations without watching them. So you can say watch BBC1 on your TV and record a program on Channel Four. You need the recorder set up with Freeview to recorder channels. Otherwise you would have to have your TV on and recorder set to record via the scart lead. Which would be not great quality and messy.
You should be able to loop the aerial lead so that both the TV and recorder can get the signals from your aerial, if that's what is bothering you.

How to hookup and use

A DVD recorder can hook up to any TV that has at least a set of AV inputs (you will need an RF modulator if your TV does not have AV inputs).

Just hookup your cable or antenna feed to the ant/cable input of the DVD recorder and loop it out to the RF input on the TV.

I bought a new dvd player thinking my old machine was going bad but the new one does the same thing. And it's not consistent. Some dvds play just fine. Others will go real dark with extreme color and...

That's the copy protection built in. Are you looping this through a VCR, or stereo, or some other secondary device before it hits the TV? If so, there are only two ways of stopping this:
1 - connect directly to the TV
2 - get a digital filter that removes the Macrovision copy protection from the signal.

Correct hookup from satilite receiver to dvd/vcr to tv

Av out from sat to AV1 on TV.
AV2 from tv to av in on dvd/vcr .
( if you can pick what av2 on the tv sends out set to send av1 out to record)
OR
AVout from sat. to AV1 on TV, AVvideo on sat to vcr/dvd.
The sat. system will act as a "play through" device so you can play vcr/dvd without changing the AV on the TV.
If you connect another lead in either option you may get a feedback loop causing audio "squeak" and video problems.
Post back to let me know if this helps.

Converter box

The cable that goes into the TV sould come from the VCR output to TV plug.
The antenna input to the VCR should come from the antenna or DTV converter box.
The signal passes through or loops through the VCR.
If you hve a manual the connections are on pages 14 an 15.
Let me know if there are any problems and a time you might be hooking this up.

You can download a manual here:

It is the signal that is digital not the TV, does your TV have a scart connection on the back? (a 2 rowed 21 pin female connection point).
That is the best way you can connect your DVD Rec. to it. The digital ready is just going to be DVB or something similar, which is just a form of digital freeview. Dont be conned by salesmen into buying a new TV with the DVD, as long as your TV was bought in the last decade or so it will have scart. If not you should just loop the RF out from the video into the DVD then out the DVD into the TV. But if you want to record from video to DVD you will have to connect the two by scart lead.
