Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

Dell Dimension 5150 PC

When I press power button, it just blinks with a orange light. I took the power supply out and checked with a electrician, he said it is fine. So I put it back, but the same thing happens. Also when I plug the power cord and turn the switch a green led light inside the mainboard is lit. What could be the problem? Can you give me a solution? Thanks

Mine is doing the same thing and what's funny is if I sit there and push and push and push and push the button (I know it sounds like a 2 year old) it eventually gets it. I was told to unplug all things that might be draining power but I really don't think that's it because once in a blue moon all that junk is plugged in and it starts...I swear it has a mind of its own...but I'll try a power supply and see what happens. I really really hope that's it, this computer isn't old enough to be giving me trouble!!!!!

    same problem a real pain

I have a similar problem on my XPS 600.

When I plug in the power cord all the fans spin like once or twice then I hear a click and the machine goes dead. I don't think the hard drives ever spin up.
The power light flashes amber and diagnostic light 4 is lit up. An amber light is on, on the motherboard.
I replaced the power supply and exactly the same thing happens. Will replace the motherboard battery next.

Same problem. After a brief power outage, only the blinking orange light comes up. This is the 3rd or 4th time it's happened. Before, it got better after about an hour, but not this time.

They say prevention is better than a cure. However if it can't be cured try this.
In Power Settings set 'When I press power button' to 'Stand By.' When the power button is pressed the power lamp will flash constantly until pc is switched back on again but the power consumption in stand by is the same as when pc is shut down, about 0.03 amps! Problem solved? And fast start up to boot! (Oooh.. pun in tentional)

REPLACE the POWER SUPPLY 1st.

90% of the time, a flashing amber power LED on a Dell system indicates a failure of one of the circuits in the power supply (Usually the lower voltages 5v 3.3 v etc) The power supply is cheap ($40) and should always be replaced before the motherboard ($150) Unless you have a known good power supply for a similiar Dell that get the same results, replace the power supply.

I've seen many power supplies that will pass a bench test, but will still be far enough out of tolerance that it will not boot a Dell.

This sounds like a motherboard fault, the green light shows power to the board but the orange can indicate that the board has failed

My Dimension 5150 box will not turn on! Just blinks, looks like an orange light. Monitor comes on then goes off to orange...

- disconnect the power cable of the box from the back of the tower and press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds (remaining power will be depleted).
- Now try using a different wall outlet.
- Check the diagnostic lights to see if the specific problem is identified (the computer has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel). Also, see "Power Problems" in your computer Owner's Manual and/or Service Manual.

Flashing orange light on power button of Dell Dimension 5150 ...

If you experience the dreaded blinking orange power light, make sure to check your motherboard for blown capacitors as well as corrosion on the motherboard. Looks like the photo below.... if you see this then a replacement motherboard is needed.

Dell Dimension 5150 automatically turns off

That flashing amber light is usually a sign the power supply is failed or is failing. I would suspect the power supply is the problem in yours. It is the better of the two problems connected with the flashing amber light..the other is motherboard is failing. Arrrr!
hope this helps (it takes a standard- oh say 350 watt 20-24 pin power supply unit.)
Hope an answer helps.
Please leave rating, thankyou

Wont turn on

I know this is an old post but for the sake of letting others know, I also had this problem with my Dimension 5150 power on button blinking amber and not responding, this was after only buying the machine in April 2006. I first took the base unit to PC World who told me the machine was knackered and i should invest in a new one, unhappy with that answer I contacted Dell who run through this whole process of pull this out, plug this in, power up, press the cd drive button etc.. etc.. all of this narrowed the fault down to a "faulty input/output panel" according to Dell, however i did some more testing of my own and found a small round flat silver battery on the circuit board, i simply popped this battery out gave it a clean popped it back in and my PC fired up first time and is now performing better than it ever has done. The only effect I can tell is that the computer date and time settings reverted to March 2006, which is easily corrected!
