you need a headset to use the microphone port. it is usually pink and headphone port is green

under neath the laptop is a set of very small cross head screws,this holds the top facia over the kewbosrd

This sounds like a bad video driver update.

Restart the machine and repeatedly tap the F8 key. When you see the advanced boot menu appear choose safe mode.

You will see white text on screen that will stop on a system 32 driver, wait a minute and let it boot through.

Next, go do device manager and uninstall the display drivers or roll back the driver to a previous one.
Reboot the machine and it should boot into windows normally. You may have to reinstall the display drivers if they don't reinstall themselves.

If you haven't already, try this: Go to the Device Manager in Control Panel. Click on the imaging devices tab. Select the usb 2.0 camera, right click and disable it.

Restart the laptop then go back to the Device Manager and turn the camera back on.

go to the desktop, then to start-settings-control panel-systems- then down to your device you want to disable, right click it, then pick disable..hope this helps

Im using the advent 4211-b and its flawless.small,light ,looks good has all you need built in and also has choice at startup windows or recovery.cant fault it.if you cant reboot.press power ,get as far as you get ,press and hold power button til switch off press power button again to restart(boot)if youre already in windows and cant shut down or reboot do the same.as long as you dont turn off and unplug no damage to the system will occur.

Depends on what you want it for. No new laptop is going to be "bad" for simple computing. Here is a brief (advert?) review of one of these:

The Advent 9517 laptop is a great value workbook and storage centre. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor is more than suitable for all your office application and media needs especially with the large 2GB memory. The 160GB hard drive included within this system will be enough storage space for loads of music, video and photo files. Combined with the 17 inch screen you will be able to watch all your video files and view photos in excellent quality. The onboard Intel graphics card is adequate for windows and video but will struggle with anything more complex so this machine is not ideal for any gaming. This laptop also comes with an integrated webcam so you can video call your friends and family with ease. In all we would recommend this laptop to be used for work or media and is very good value considering the amount of memory and hard drive space you get for the price.

So the question is back to you "Will it suit yor needs?" and if you are still in doubt pay extra for the one that you think will do the job, but remember - In 2 years time even the latest laptop will be old hat.

Note: Except for speed, I could still be happy with my first 486 based laptop running Windows 95, but I would not be running the latest programs on it. My requirements for a laptop are mainly to do with navigation and the usual Office products (my main computer is a different matter!).
