Error oxe001042c ocurred during installation of avg free 8.0. cannot remove or re-install.

    System restore did not remove the faulty installation. the operating system is Windows XP Professional.

    yes the installation has started but has stalled due to the above error. I have tried both the restore and the add/remove program but it just refers me to the avgtechinicalassist web site.

    One thing that you can try is using system restore to before you installed it. It may have to do with a previous anti-virus. Let me know if system restore works. If you have any questions or need further assistance please let me know. If you have a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly I would greatly appreciate it.

    Is there an installation that has started, is there anything in the programs folder or do you only get the error when you try and install? Once I have enough information I know I can provide you with the best solution.

    Did you ask on the website? It is free so you do get what you pay for sometimes. I know they will be able to help you better then anyone because it is their software. If the software never installed then none of that will help. Where did you download the program from? Also is XP totally up to date on all updates?

    Also did you use to have avg 7.5? or an earlier version of AVG? This may be whats causing your problem.

    "In short, the prefered thing to do is try and cleanup as much as we can
    so we can proceed. I also want to take steps that this is indeed what
    happened so you can avoid as much work as possible but still get this
    cleaned up properly.

    To see where Windows "thinks" it is at... look in the Control Panel
    -> Add/Remove Programs.... check for either the AVG or AVG
    v8.0xxx item. I suspect you will find the AVG item instead and
    the following steps are based on that assumption.

    Next, let's see what files do actually exist in the older AVG 7x
    program folder and the AVG 8 program folder ( if it exists ). Open
    Windows Explorer and navigate to your Program Files folder... most
    likely its located in C:\Program Files. Look for both an AVG folder and
    a Grisoft folder and look inside of each one. In the AVG folder you
    should find another subfolder named AVG8 and you want to see if its
    files still exist there. In the Grisoft folder you should find either
    an AVG7 folder or perhaps an AVG Free folder ( the names may be
    slightly different ) look into that folder and see what files are there
    if any.

    If you find both the AVG8 and AVG7.5.xx folders ( whatever they are
    named )... then we will first cleanup the AVG8 installation and remove
    it properly. After that we will deal with the AVG7.5 x installation to
    remove it as much as possible.

    I'm going to have you simply rename the AVG8 install folder for now
    just in case ( this gives us other choices later in case of issues that
    may come up ). Navigate to C:\Program Files\AVG and then rename the
    AVG8 folder to AVG8old or something similar.

    Now download the latest AVG 7.5 installation program from Filehippo
    ( since AVG Technologies doesn't host it now ) and perform the
    following steps.

    ( remember we are wanting the version not the 8 yet )

    1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from []

    2. Run the AVG Free install file

    3. Choose the Repair option and follow the setup wizard

    4. Restart your computer then test that it actually runs...

    Now to update to v8... we actually want to remove the version we
    just repaired... basically we performed the repair only to be able to
    remove it properly.

    Again remember to run the AVG v7.5 install file you got just a moment ago...

    1. Run the AVG Free install file

    2. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.

    3. Restart your computer then...

    Now let's see that it the AVG program folder is removed.
    Navigate to C:\Program Files\ ... look for and if found remove the
    Grisoft folder.

    Now let's do just some system cleanup on temp files and the registry. Download CCleaner from []
    and install it. Run it and click the Run Cleaner button. Next... select
    the Registry icon from the left side and then tell it to Scan for
    Issues... then select Fix Issues and then repeat this process until it
    finally finds no more issues... usually this takes about 3-4 runs to
    get them all but every system is different.

    When finished... restart the system.

    Now you should be able to install AVG 8 as long as their are no other issues that come up after the restart."
    This is the fix I got from the AVG free forum. It has fixed your exact problem. Once you have done this you should be good to go. If you have a moment to accept and rate my solution hopefully FixYa! as I strive to provide accurate and economical solutions.

AVG Free Edition wont install on Dell Studio lap top runs Vista

First follow the following steps :
  1. Start the computer. Press the F8 key during startup to start the computer in Safe mode.
  2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  3. Delete the following registry keys in the Windows registry:HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\AVGHKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\AVG
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the computer.
Then uninstall AVG completely from your computer
and install AVG free edition.

Instead of installing AVG free, download & install Avira Antivir Personal Free. It is better compared to AVG in terms of virus detection 7 also very light on the system.

Unable to install AVG 8 free

Strippy had asked you a right question. You may be trying to install AVG when you have already one antivirus program running. OR you had once installed AVG sometimes in the past, but uninstallation was not properly done. Hence it is showing registry key error.

1. If you are running any anitvirus prog now, first uninstall it. Then restart the machine.

2. Now you try install AVG. it should install. if not, try the following

Go to system restore and create restore point for safety.

go to run and type regedit and then enter

Press cntrl + F for finding earlier registry keys of AVG. Try to find out all old registry keys amd delete them all.

Restart the machine. Its DONE.

Avg 8 removal problem....

The recommended procedure is a time consuming one. You must download the latest version of AVG from the website, and then run it.

1) Click on the following link and download AVG to your desktop

2) Double-click on the downloaded file to run it
3) AVG will present you with three options to choose from. Choose the Uninstall option to completely uninstall AVG

Add/Remove Components - choose if you want to add/remove some components or reinstall the entire AVG program
Repair installation - this option repairs or reinstalls missing or damaged components of AVG
Uninstall - this option removes the AVG program from your PC

4) Once the uninstall has completed, restart your computer. You can then proceed to install another antivirus or install AVG again.

I have installation set up failure on file C. Error code: OXE001042C

are you installing AVG?...
1.try downloading the file again...
2. try using a 7.5 installation file and installed 7.5 instead of 8.0.. don't worry you will still be protected.. and updates will still be avaliable for now.

This is simply a bad download. You will need to start by completely removing the failed install, otherwise you're going to run into it all over again. Now, did you save the down load or just run it straight from the net? If it was a straight run, you may have encountered a slight internet glitch during the run. What you want to do is save the download to the desktop, then right click on it and run as administrator. It should install properly this way. Another thing is make sure that you don't have any other Antivirus, spyware, or adware programs on the machine. If you do, you will need to remove them, AVG covers them all. The reason you want to remove them is because they perceives the AVG as a threat, especially other Antivirus programs, not a harmful threat, but a competitor threat, and will stop the download or install. Antivirus companies, especially Norton, doesn't like to lose their customers, so they throw in these little blocking programs, in hopes that it will detour you from going to another.
