Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 320GB External USB 2.0 - WDH1U3200N Hard Drive

I think I'm in over my head...

OMG! What did I get in to? I installed this device to free up space on my hard drive b/c its running really slow and I assumed it was b/c I have a lot of music and pictures. I didn't want to buy a new computer so I got this piece of **** to house the music and photos. Well... I synced it with my "My Music" folder, which I think holds all of my I-Tunes music and 4 hours later...still running. In the interim, I can't access I-tunes. Is it b/c its syncing the folder? I don't know. I've been looking all over the interset for some guidance b/c the manual is basically useless. It only explains how to hook the damned thing up. I can't even get a clear picture of what the thing does. $120.00 later and I still don't know if I bought the right device. Can you help me or give me some guidance as to what I should be looking for or anything. Also, can I turn my computer off while this thing is running? At this rate, I won't be able to turn it off for 2 weeks! Thanks, Mina in New Jersey.

It's meant for storage unless it is an eSATA drive. Typical internal drivers range in speed from 133Mbps- 2Gbps(133000000bits per second=133Mbps)

Your external drive, if it is USB only operates at about 12Mbps, needless to say great for extra space, not so great for working directly off of.

What does it mean when my drive storage appear red and says there is only 250 mb left?

it means you've filled up your hard drive.
you need a minimum of 15% free space on your hard drive or it will start going very slow and won't work properly and the hard drive will be constantly running.
you need to remove stuff from it onto an external drive or just delete it.

I have a seagate external drive of a capacity of 250GB. the free space available is 177 GB. the hard disk is very slow? please help?

Are you connecting this high-speed ("USB 2.0") device to a low-speed ("USB 1.1") USB-port on your computer? If so, and your computer has a "USB 2.0" port, connect your device to that port.
If not, then purchase an add-in PCI card for your computer, to add "USB 2.0" port(s).

How to upgrade a harddrive. because my desktop is running slowly

Hello

If your computer starts running slow, it does not necessarilly mean that you need to replace your HDD.
TRy reloading windows, and upgrading your ram first. The harddrive you use has little effect on the actual running speed of your computer.

I really hope this can help you.

Kind regards
Andrea

You can download a free trial of Partition Magic, it a good HDD Formatting tool.
Download from here
Download and install it, Got a really Easy and User friendly interface, probably your HDD got some unformatted space or there may be Partition Table Error.
The software will guide you further.
Do update me, what was the result. Regards, Waqar.

The most common reason for slow processing speed is insufficient RAM memory.

Increase the RAM, if RAM available is no more than 512MB, then it must be upgraded.

Check also your hard drive state. If you have less than 1GB free, that will slow down the system. Go to Start>>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defregmenter and do a Defrag of the hard disk.

If you have at least 1 GB RAM, and you took care of the hard drive, then you can check the process starting up on their own and remove the useless one, or spot mala-ware that can affect speed. You can use a software like Hijack This, and search on google te function of each process started on the list reported by the software.

You can download Hijack this here MajorGeeks | If download does not start, then click at the top of the page, where it says Click Here If It Does Not.
Be careful if you delete the wrong files using this software you can harm the system, and Windows may not work properly.

If you think you have malaware you can also install Spy Bot, and do a system scan. Download Spybot from The home of Spybot.

If all the above does not work, and there is no malaware, then you usually reinstall the system.

Check also the bios settings, BIOS can downgrade the CPU speed on default , even if this is uncommon on recent BIOS.

If a computer is still slow with a fresh system and enough resources then it is one of those rare occasions when you have an hardware fault.
Hardware that can cause slow down is: RAM CPU Motherboard HD Video card.

Some tips on procedure can damage your windows installation. Do not download Hijackthis software and do not change BIOS settings and do not touch hardware unless you are sure of what you are doing.

You should connect the hard drive with the 2.5" adapter.

The instructions can be found with the imags in the link given below :

Hello
So you don't really need to update the driver of it since its a portable drive.
Did you try plugging the drive to a different usb port on your pc and if it's still not detected try connecting that driver to another pc to check if it will be detected.
