Question about Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250W Portable Generator

1 Answer

Not a 6250W but a 6500W Coleman Powermate Black Max.

Purchased this generator in Oct. '05 after Katrina/Rita and never needed to use it until this year for Gustav/Ike. I did run this generator for about 15 minutes every 2/3 months while it was stored. When I needed it for Gustav it ran well for about 6 hours until power was restored. Than for Ike again I ran it for about 10 hours until it stopped generating power even tho the engine was still running but noise was coming from the generator head. I shut off the engine and found pieces of copper wire below the unit and sticking out of the cooling slots in the engine adapter. What could be the problem? As I paid $800.00 for it, is it repairable and at what cost? I understand Coleman Powermate no longer exists where can I get a replacement generator head?

I have the same problem. I bought the same generator after Rita and while using it after Ike the motor worked properly but it stopped generating. I had a technician look at it and he said that the alternator and stator? was burned up. The motor works fine I just need to find a generator head.

I had the same problem but I had it break during Katrina. It was (Ha,Ha) by a local service center. Brought it home and ran it for 6 hours to make sure it was good to go. Gustave hit, pulled it out ran for 2 maybe 3 hours broke again. Pulled the cover and saw they had patched it together using epoxy and electrical tape instead of replacing it.

Called the 1-800, sorry we are not them they went bankrupt. but we have parts Parts to fix it $566.35, ok ship it. It's better than the $900 I paid for the whole thing. Wrong parts and Fed-ex killed the new head.

It's not worth the aggravation, sell the engine on one e-bay or craig's list and get a new generator.

When you say generator head do you mean the alternator sounds to me like the alternator has blown?

Call Pramac Co. at 770-218-5430. I get parts from them every week. A service center left holding the bag when Coleman/Powermate went out. Ken's Repair

Hi there:
Remove the back cover and look for damaged brushes or electronic parts, I'm assuming you have some electric-mechanical skills. otherwise you better take it to a service shop

I have a coleman powermate generator 6250 max watts. The black on/off switch wire pulled out off the engine some where and I need to know where it goes. If it goes to the magneto, where is the magneto...

you must dislocate the handle and it's base will find the magnetos in the FLY-WHEEL area.trace it's wireing till you find a cut-off black wire...and reconnect it...
PS. it might be disconnected and not cut...and that way it will be harder to trace..

if u have any further questions email me at
