I'm having problems running programs on my HP pavilion dv2000. The programs having problems are: Google Chrome setup Firefox 3.0.1 Nortel Contivity VPN The problem is that all 3 programs cannot access the internet. The start running but stop when they need to get on the network. I've disabled the Norton security suite and Windows firewall. Firefox 3.0 works.

The problem looks with the Nortel VPN. VPN software blocks all other Internet connections when started. This way they create a secure, encrypted tunnel from your pc to the destination pc and does not allow the other connections -Firefox, Chrome etc- to perform. The non performing Internet applications mean less threats online (e.g. nobody can exploit a flaw in Firefox and reach your VPN connection).

If the problem is that the browsers do not function even after you stop the VPN connection, it may be that the VPN software is still running in the background. You can make Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up the running processes and see if the VPN is running in the background. If yes, turn it off.

I keep getting a message that "a problem caused the program to stop working properly. Windows will close program and notify you if solution is found." Its Internet Explorer and no solution has come!

Hi
To be quite honest I have found that this happens quite a lot with IE. If you want or need to continue using IE, then make sure that you have the most up-to-date version by checking with the MS website here:
Internet Explorer
and if you are not fully up-to-date, download and install the latest version for your Windows version.
Alternatively you could use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, both of which are more stable than IE. If you go to the google search homepage, there is a link to download chrome there and you can download Firefox from here:
Download Firefox Free Web Browser
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

With all the problems I'm having with this Chromebook I've now factory reset it 9 times (!) since purchasing it Nov 1, 2013. Twice with the aid of someone from Google and once HP factory reset it for

Chrome books are notoriously bad hardware. Poor graphics and low amounts of ram because they are built to run Linux, which does not require all the power that windows does. Linux itself is a decent system to run on, but if you have a windows 7 disk you'd probably be happier with 7 than the Chromebook linux. But, if you dont have a problem with the OS itself then I'd suggest another refresh. Malware sucks: It gets into your root files and watches everything you type. it is possible someone IN turkey stole your credentials and is logging in with them in attempt to gain access to your banking or credit card info. I would report my info as stolen to the bank, get new cards and etc, and wipe/reload the OS, and before doing *anything* online, get some protection. I believe Avast! antivirus will run on a linux setup, and also you should get adblockplus. www.adblockplus.org

What internet browser are you using? If you are using firefox or google chrome, you will most likely be able to remedy this problem by downloading the adblock extension.

What programs conflict with this Z5600 system? put basic programs eg. office 2007, Firefox 3.6 browser, Google Chrome, AVG security, Google Earth + plug in. Screen locking up need to turn off/on to...

Have you got the latest Microsoft updates loaded? That can cause that especially with Google. I have not heard of any conflicts with FireFox. Office is suspect also if the Office updates are missing. Have you enough RAM to run all programmes at once? Check the specifications maybe.
Good luck.

Why does my computer keep slowing down?

The problem is Firefox...it is a resource hog and they have to fix it. It will not release the ram it allocates for itself even after you shut the program down. You can actually hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and bring up the task manager and go to processes and find firefox there and shut it off. My honest opinion is use Google Chrome...it uses very little resources and is the fastest browser out there and you can import all your favorites, etc. Using firefox and watching videos will bring a decent system to its knees.
