Kenmore refrigerator is cycling compressor on and off. Not cooling

After blowing a circuit. The bathroom is on the same circuit as the refrigerator or it was anyway. The compressor now cycles on and off after about 10 to 15 seconds. It is not cooling at all now.

    Greetings,

I don't have a kenmore but my basic understanding is that when you have

on and off cyling going on, it usually indicated a lose of r134 or

freon (or what have you) and NOT a bad relay. The cyling would not be

taking place if the relay were bad because it would not be switching

and hence you would NOT hear clicking or cyling.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

No cooling or compressor operation

Compressor and evap fan cycling are controlled by a circuit board as well as the defrost. It is all in serie - once your defrost kicks in contact is cut from the evap fan and compressor - once defrost is finished the switch reverts back to normal operation and your evap fan & compressor turns on.

Most common causes of this issue is either a defrost timer fault or control board (burnt resistor or bad board).

Inspecting and changing the control board will usually fix the issue - if your evap fan comes on after changing the board but not the compressor then you have a bad compressor.

If you have one of those units like some whirlpool/Kenmore/Inglis that have electronic controls in the refrigerator section, this is the board that controls the thermostat and compressor on/off cycling. The board behind your freezer is also connected to the board in your fridge, this one controls the defrost.

Freezer willnot longer get cold only cool air

Do you hear the compressor humming? If the compressor does not run then your freezer will not get cold.

Blowing out air but not cooling or freezing /kenmore coldspot

see if the compressor motor is running
The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts.
Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt.

Kenmore side by side shorts out when plugged in

Try a different circuit to plug the fridge. Possible you GFI is weak and can not take the start surge of the compressor. Refrigerators need to be on 20 amp circuits and not on same circuits with lights ,televisions, etc.
Also if the refrigerator has be laid down on its side during moving give it 24 hour for the oil to return to the compressor. This also is a symptom of overload on the compressor.

My frig stopped cooling

Interior lights working?
If not check circuit breaker or fuse for that circuit.

If they are on, are you still hearing any noise from the compressor?
If not, your compressor may have failed or you have lost too much coolant for it to turn on.

If the compressor is running, a circulating fan may have failed and the cooled air is not circulating.

Compressor is cycling on the overload protector. If refrigerator is over five years old the warranty may be expired. I which case I never recommend replacing the compressor if the customer is to bear the full expense.

Kenmore Refrig #57572791 - Keeps blowing circuit

If you have an OHM meter, check from the flat conductors of the plug to the ground section of the plug. Any reading at all indicates a short in the circuit. Most likely place of the short could be the compressor. If you are capable, with the unit unplugged disconnect the leads from the compressor, then see if the breaker trips when you plug it in. If not the problem is the compressor . At ten years old it would be more expedient to get a new refrigerator than to replace the compressor. The warranty is up and you would pay the big bill for the compressor and labor.
