I can read the drive and open the folders on the drive. It's just that the backup software and configuring software isn't working. It asked do I wish to try again, cancel, or abort, and chose to abort.

I have given you my system information. I also told you the install was aborted so there's nothing to uninstall. Nor does the configure program on the Free Agent allow the user to install it somewhere else.

Regarding the word 'backup' I don't know anything about that aprt. It's just the word that the install program used to describe a feature of itself. I have not gotten to the "Register the equipment" part.

If you don't mind, please give me the full path to the folder it wants to install in and I can try it again, but error 1406 doesn't write the full path. It just begins with a back-slash, so I have no idea. And there's no such folder in my system.

  • craig_br Sep 15, 2008

I have not ben able to load the configure software, yet. I set up a folder on my C drive Which I named "Free Agent I" and then browsed to that folder and again attempted to set it up there. The error is still 1406. It cannot write stxtraymenu to key \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

I don't know what it's talking about. Nor does it give me the full path.

I finally learned how to shut down my firewall and antivirus protection from Bit Defender. That was the problem. So It's all installed now and working aay. Thank you.

This is your Roxio Softare that is causing this (Reads the Disc) These is the program that is linked to the cd/rom drive....

Fix
Acquire administrative privileges

Make sure that you have administrative privileges on your computer if running the installation on Windows XP. Installations require administrative privileges on these operating systems in order to create registery keys. If you do not have administrative privileges on your computer, Error 1406 may occur while trying to create a registry key. To acquire administrative privileges on your computer, refer to the article Acquire Administrative Privileges on Your Computer below this .

Try one of this links to show you how to make sure that you have Adminstartion Rights privlages

Hey, seems a security program is blocking the program from writeing into registery, the currentversion\run is a start up folder. I suggest turn off your firewalls and antivirus programs for the duration of the setup

My seagate free agent 320gb hard drive won't power on

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

if this fails to fix the problem

check usb leads for secure dust free seating

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luck
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

How to partion seagate Free Agent Pro in Windows XP

First make sure that you have a bootable Windows Vista installation DVD, as you will be unable to use your computer if you don’t. Next, download the GParted Live CD and burn it to cd.
Boot off the GParted cd, and you will see your hard drives in the drop-down list. The first drive is typically your boot drive, but you can check the Flags column to make sure.

Next you’ll need to right-click on the partition and choose Resize/Move from the menu.

Now you can either use the New Size textbox, or just click and drag the partition to make it smaller (or bigger). When you are done, click the Resize/Move button. This doesn’t immediately apply the changes, though. You can make other changes to your partitions and then when you are finished click the Apply button.Depending on the amount of data and the speed of your computer, it can take quite a while to resize the partitions. On my computer it took more than 30 minutes.

Once it’s done, quit, remove the live cd and then reboot your computer. Unless you are very lucky, you’ll be greeted with this horrible error message saying “Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.”
Hope this helps!

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.
