Tractor will not start and only gives an initial click when key is turned

Check to see if juice is reaching the starter motor terminals and that it is grounded. If ground is ok and no juice then you will have to back trace all of the components in that circuit . Also check to make sure that all of the safety switches are in closed position when you go to start and run tractor.

How do you disengage the clutch after being left on when turning the engine off?

You can kill the engine with the PTO clutch on and then turn the PTO off before trying to restart because the PTO will auto disengage when the engine switch is turned off. The engine should not start if the PTO switch is on.

Check the switch down by the gear shift lever, and the wiring to the switch, if one of the wires has come off the switch it will give problems.

My MTD 14hp lawn tractor (38", 6 speed) shuts of

You have a short somewhere . A cut or stripped wire that , at the time of lowering your deck, touches the body. It's like turning off your key. Look around under your deck and you will find what I'm talking about. Fix wire and tie up to prevent future problems. GOOD LUCK.

My yard machine tractor does nothing when I turn the key. The battery is new. However the tractor is 12 years old. Could this be the alternator?

If it does nothing when you turn the key then replacing an alternator will not help. Numerous things could be causing this condition. I will try to cover a few. Make sure your PTO for the blades is disengaged and the clutch pedal is depressed. Make sure your battery voltage and all connections are good. Also make sure it is hooked up correctly. There is a fuse, usually near the solenoid, you need to check that. If all the above is good check to see if you have voltage going to the solenoid: There is a small wire that hooks to a spade terminal, you need to have 12 volts on this wire when the key is in the start position. If you do not, then you need to troubleshoot your safety switched. If you have 12 volts, then you may have a bad solenoid. Good luck, hope this gets you in the right direction.
