Question about Sony KDS-R50XBR1 50" HDTV

TV screen went black, sound ok, red light blink 5 times

Our Sony KDS-R50XBR1 was purchased in March 06. We already had the optical part replaced under warranty fall of 07. Today while watching the TV, the screen just went dark. The sound is still present. The green standby light was flashing. I turned it off, unplugged and waited, and no luck. Now when I turn it on, it is dark with sound and the green light flashing for about a minute, then the set turns off and the standby light blinks red in a series of 5. Please help!

    Hi All,

Thanks for the comments. I found out it was under warranty and someone came out to fix it 6 days later. It was a five blink code and it was the lamp bulb. It was a fast fix for the guy and I am really glad we had the warranty. I was on a different site that where someone submitted a solution that was way off. These solutions were much more practical as i have heard about the dreaded fan issues. My husband overseas even thought that was the issue. I am going to file these solutions as insurance for the next time we have an issue. Thanks so much for all of your help!!! I do appreciate it.

For what it's worth: WD40 was designed as a rust inhibitor. I would suggest a lubricant that does not oxidize into a varnish nor evaporate. Marvel Mystery oil would be a better solution or a silicone based oil perhaps. I used Marvel Mystery oil on my bathroom exhaust fan and its been going for 10 years now.

Be sure its blinking 5 times, count after it cycles the first time through the red lights. If it is fact 5 times, that is a lamp driver error.More likely it cycled 4 times, which is common on this model, if that's the case, then it's the fan. Most likely the large one in the rear...It's an easy fix, just pull the back off and replace the part.

This is a fan issue, most likely the large fan in the rear, lower left (from the back)...

    Here's the fix, I promise, it's EASY........

Ok, I think I have the answer for the BIG FAN failure. I recently did a
similar fix on the spindle of an xbox 360 and it is identical. Ok, this
    is an EXTREMELY EASY FIX...

Open the back of the tv, locate the large fan (on the lower left on the back of the set.) unscrew the screen and remove the fan.

Once the fan is removed, you will see the side with the model number and the other side is totally open.

    On the open side, pull...

The fan will come off, into your hand, it is only held by magnets...

You will notice a spindle on the fan and the other side has the magnets
and the hole where the spindle came from (this is the fan motor).

Clean both the spindle and the hole (motor) with a q-tip. The hole is
smaller than the q-tip, but do the best you can to remove the old
    lubricant.

Get a bit of WD40 and lubricate the spindle and spray a touch in the hole.

Put them together, reconnect your fan, test it on startup and thank me...lol...

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!! IT WORKS, TRUST ME...

Whatever the lubricant, my fix is to save those having fan issues that are easily repairable at home...

Make sure the lamp is OK first. It needs to seated correctly, if the tv is blinking 3 times it means one of the switches within the lamp tunnel is not working. Make sure the lamp door is seated correctly.

Sony kds-r50xbr1 turns itself off and then green light blinks 52

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working.  The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode.  Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it.  Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced.  If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp.  The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual.  I hope this helps you.

Sony KDS-R50XBR1

Here's the best way to get Sony's attention and possible help.

Send an old fashioned letter to Sony outlining the problems and your concerns regarding your TV. Make sure to prominently indicate that a copy of the letter is being sent to the complaint division at the attorney general's office in your state. After having to settle claims surrounding their optical block (light engine) issues they now understand that failure to address their customer's complaints may result in another judgement against them.

Good luck and give 'em hell!

WEGA only show yellow

Hello watts74:

When you turn your tv on, you still get an image of whatever channel you are on, but the background on the entire screen is green/yellow, correct? If so, the problem is the optical block. Read what I posted below on another thread and you should be on your way to getting your situation resolved.

Here is the link to the other thread I mentioned: http://www.fixya.com/support/t157434-green

All the best...

If your SONY KDS-R50XBR1 or KDS-R60XBR1 color screen suddenly turns green, the optical block (aka light engine) is the culprit. Don't fret because as "Leadtech" has already posted back on Jul 04, 2007, SONY is aware of this problem and has extended the warranty to replace this very part. Additionally, and aside from the class action lawsuit currently pending in district court, parts and labor for in-house service IS included.

SONY states the warranty as follows:

"As part of the Sony commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor), in the United States, on the optical block of KDS-R50XBR1 and KDS-R60XBR1 model SXRD televisions until October 31, 2008, regardless of purchase date."

So all you have to do is:

1) Contact SONY Customer Service at (800) 222-7669 or (888) 772-7669 - Hours: Mon-Fri 9:00AM-10:00PM / Sat-Sun 10:30AM-7:15PM EST

2) Provide them with your model (as above) and your television's serial number

3) Tell them your screen color is nothing but green

4) They will provide you with a case number

5) They will ask you for your zip code and provide you with one or more SONY authorized service dealers, and their contact information.

6) You contact the dealer of your choice and schedule an in-house service. Explain to them that your screen is green and you are aware that many, same tv-model owners that have had this same problem, and that the optical block is the problem.

7) The SONY authorized dealer you speak with will schedule and appointment with you, and will provide in-house service.

Regarding the service, it will take about an hour to complete. Not that it is complicated for the technician, but where the optical block is located is that is time-consuming. It sits just "behind" the bottom of the tv screen and in order to get to it, the technician will have to:

1) Remove the bottom back gray cover

2) Remove the replaceable projection lamp located on the left side of the tv (looking from the back)

3) Remove lots of phillips screws

4) Disconnect many plugs

5) Remove 3 chassis closest to the back of the tv before getting to the optical block chassis, which is located up front, just behind the tv screen

Once the optical block is replaced, you will be amazed on correct color results.

Hope this helps...
