After looking at all these posts , I can't for the life of me figure out why nobody is listening to this person when they say they DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL SETUP CDROM

Did anybody think to ask the person what Operating system was on the computer to begin with ?

If it was windows 98 , chances are XP is not going to do well on a system like that

if it's an XP machine , then I suggest NOT loading an XP disc that has already been ACTIVATED on another machine !

This person requires a RESTORE DISC from the company he got the computer from.

Or they have the option to buy an Operating System Disc appropreate to their computer.

Thank you

The real solution to this problem is to copy the contents of windows/repair to windows/repair/system32/config/system

you can do this with the xp setup cd, start up recovery console and copy the files. Or perform a repair installation from the xp cd.

The Cd can be booted as long as your BIOS is set for you too do this. that can be activated in the Install screen F2 so this is also a possibility but lets start off by having you insert that disc and see if it prompts you to the REPAIR Windows or does it not load at all? If it does not load then the BIOS may have the Boot/Load sequence not set for that DRIVE in may be on the HDD or the Floppy ..... OK but the Bios is very easy as long as you do not change any settings (But that too is easy to fix) Default Settings (RESET back To Default Settings etc.

If you cannot still boot and do a recovery using the CD for your laptop, that will be a problem and you may need to reload the operating system for that.....

Make sure that the boot order is set for cd as the first device.  Load your Windows CD up.  Then the restore options will load up on the screen.

You set the boot order up by changing the BIOS settings by pressing the appropriate function key to get into the BIOS setup mode and look for the boot section.  Change the boot priority to CD first, Hard drive as second.  Save your setting and reboot.

You will get a message to press any key to boot to cd.  Press any key and follow the instructions on the screen.

You will need to hit f8 when the computer is booting up. What happens when you put the Windows XP disc in? Is this disc an official XP disc?(not a recovery disc). You may need to enter the bios and tell the bios to boot from CD drive first. This work is really the work for a professional. You can bring it into geek squad and have it repaired. If you have a moment to accept and rate my solution it would be appreciated as I strive to provide fast and accurate solutions.

Borrow that CD-ROM from any friend who does have one -- you don't need to have your "original" disk.

Or, telephone eMachines, and order a replacement set of "System Restore" disks.
Probably $20, plus $20 for overnight-courier shipping.

you have a registry problem! that could be result of a hardware problem.. there is a good article of things you can try, it's usually suggested for you use the same xp cd that you use to install the os, otherwise is risky business using a different cd... you may want to find a cd that has the same service pack you have before starting... if you can't get that cd, read my suggestiong below

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Windows/C:%5Cwindows%5Csystem32%5Cconfig%5Csystem_missing_or_corrupt.html

I strongly suggest the following:
first of all if possible, take your hard drive out, using and enclosure or another machine try to back up your data so it things go wrong or it's just taking too much time, you can just wipe out the hard drive and start fresh with a clean install, you may find it this to be the easiest and fastest way... back up your data regardless then start troubleshooting.

Having problems with my compaq Persario 2500

this problem occurs when you try to update drivers in the computer..sometimes windows XP cannot update the driver and that corrupts system.ini file as it has a lot of bad entries..Due to this you will get this error mesage..No its not due to virus.its due to an attempt to change system.ini file

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software
