Brush on dc20 does not work - Vacuums

When I use the normal brush head it does not pick up properly - however if I use the small upholstery attachment on the same carpet it picks up fine - obviously the upholstery attachment is too small to vacuum a whole house as it would take forever. I am really fed up with this and it has been like this since I bought the vacuum cleaner approx. 12 months ago.

Not much suction

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC21 Motorhead doesn't seem to be picking up as well as it should be, you may need to wash the lifetime pre-filter. In normal use this should be washed at least once every 3-6 months using cold water without detergent. Allow at least 12 hours for both parts of the filter to dry completely before replacing them in your machine.

You may also want to follow the steps shown in our online Support guide to make sure the Motorhead floor tool, wand and hose are free of any obstructions:

How do I empty dyson stowaway

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson

There are several different models (DC--) of Dyson Stowaway vacuum, and the method of emptying the clear bin after use would depend on which particular model you own.

If you own DC20 or DC21 Motorhead, the bin and cyclone pack separate so you can tip out the dust and debris

If you own DC23, the bin base opens at the push of the red release catch, dumping the dust and debris at arms' length:
I hope this helps. If you'd like any further guidance on using or maintaining your Dyson Stowaway vacuum, please give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call. You can reach us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

How do I dismantle the telescopic wand on my DC20? I've tried washing it but the smell is still present. I think it needs separated

Hi Gerardette, it's Jack at Dyson.

We would strongly advise against washing or attempting to dismantle your DC20's wand. Not only can this cause damage as it's not designed to be taken apart, but the water can actually increase any odour coming from the wand as it may not be possible to dry it effectively. Attempting any maintenance not shown in the User guide could also void any guarantee remaining on your machine.

I would encourage you to contact our experts directly for some advice - you can reach us by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Need to dismantle a dyson dc20 power head a the turbine is tight. one screw is inaccessible unless the cover opposite the red pull out 'activator' is removed. How do you get the cover off??

I just cracked this. The cover can be prised off using a flat-blade screwdriver. There is a little slot for this. I imagine there is a proper tool for the job, because it's a bit difficult and a bit frightening, but it does come off. I couldn't do the same with the larger cover on the other side, though. My brush wasn't rotating, so I squirted as much WD40 as I dared in as many orifices as I could find, and, lo and behold, on reassembly it started working again.

When you turn on the Vac with the brush strip NOT installed does the part that engages the brush strip turn at all? If so, when you install the brush strip see if the will turn when no pressure is applied to the brushes (tilt the Vac back). If none of this works, then the switch that engages the brushes when the unit is not fully upright may be broken. If the part that engages the brushes turns but won't turn when the brush strip is engaged then one of the parts that mate up it most likely stripped. Let us know what you discover!
