Question about Canon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

Dropped my Canon A620 Powershot briefly in water. Dried it out (took memory card & batteries out). After a few days I turned it on-, and I can't get past the "set date/time" screen (can't even use arrows to set date/time). Any ideas, or is it toasted? Thanks for any help. Your sensor and your inner board is getting malfunctioned so you need to contact canon so that they can check it and repair it .
If it is under warranty it could be solved at no cost .

Thanks for using Fixya .

The camera will not turn on.

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

Canon A620 LCD shows "memory card locked" for each card I insert

This worked for me!  I have the Canon Powershot SD780 IS and although my card WAS NOT locked, the camera "malfunctioned" and the switch in the camera needed to be gently pushed back IN, not DOWN on my specific camera type.  This is great, I was just going to go out and buy another camera today!  Thanks for the post Stephan!

When I inserted the new memory card (SanDisk Ultra II, 4GB) into my Canon PowerShot A620, it tells me "Memory Card Error". This is a brand new card. What do I do? It had been working just fine with a...

Some cameras cannot handle over 2GB memory cards. If it works fine with 2GB card - stick to that. If some other A620 you know operates with 4GB card, take yours to repairs.

Camera will not accept any memory card over 2GB. Keeps saying "Memory Card Error"

Most new 4GB and larger cards are SDHC cards (look on the card). Although they look exactly the same as a standard SD card, they are not. Unfortunately, there is no way that these cards will work with your camera, as it was designed before the SDHC format came out. As you've dsicovered, 2GB and less are standard SD cards, and will work with your camera.

There were a few standard 4GB cards produced a few years ago, most notably by ADATA (I have one that I use in my A620). Unfortunately, these are rare now, and are somewhat expensive if found on eBay.

I put a brand new SanDisk SDHC 4 GB memory card in and it says "memory card error; card is locked".

I also own an A620, but unfortunately I also learned the hard way that SDHC cards are not compatible with this camera. The A620 was designed before the newer SDHC format came out, thus although they look exactly the same, your camera will never work with these cards. Your camera uses standard SD cards (2GB or less). There are some standard 4GB SD cards, but they are very rare these days, and costly.

Water damage

PROBABLY NOT, BUT WHAT YOU MIGHT DO IS SEE IF A REPAIR SHOP WOULD AT LEAST TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND SEE IF IT IS AT ALL REPAIRABLE AND GIVE YOU A QUOTE. CHANCES ARE THE REPAIR WILL BE SO COSTLY, IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO REPLACE THE CAMERA. SORRY, BUT THIS IS ABOUT THE BEST SOLUTION I CAN OFFER IN THIS CASE. YOU CAN FIND CAMERA REPAIR ON GOOGLE UNDER CANON POWERSHOT REPAIR SERVICE. IF I CAN DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR YOU REPLY TO:

Camera will not power up correctly

Again the same old compact camera zoom lens problems - sand in lens, stuck AF motor, chewed up plastic gears...you only have to look at them wrong and they will die... (A very cynical camera repairer that has tried to repair these damn things soo often!!) Even cameras with internal lenses like the old Nikon 950/990/4500 still have troubles with stuck motors and broken lens parts. I despair - these things are just made to last the guarantee out (if that long) and die horribly afterwards!!
