Question about Yamaha HTR-5550 Receiver
The Volume control on my Yamaha HTR-5550 no longer works (actually tends to turn the volume up no matter which way you turn it. Control from the remote is fine, but there are times when it would be handy to just reach out and turn it down with the knob.
Any simple solutions?
Unfortunately, it sounds as if the encoder is broken. The encoder is a digital input which takes the place of a traditional volume control, and is what holds the volume knob in place and spins. Since it works fine with the remote, that means everything else is ok, but you will have to replace, or have a tech replace, the encoder itself.

There is a good chance that a common control may have developed a high-resistance or 'dead' spot through idleness and is causing your symptom. Turn the POWER OFF and operate every control throughout its range a number of times, especially rarely-used ones like Tape Monitors and the Mute control.
Turn the volume to something reasonable and see if that helped.
