Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Washer shows no signs of power

I have a Whirlpool Calypso model #GVW9959kL2 , I live in New Orleans and when we returned after the hurricane we washed 2 loads of clothes. 2 days later I went to wash again and it looked like I had no power. I checked the breaker, outlet and plug. I also checked the plug, black box it connects to on both sides and each card connector for power with a volt meter, every point shows power. I also checked the door switch with a ohms meter and that checked good. We have had a few power surges and next day my washer came on, I washed 2 more loads of clothes fine, the next day my washer shows no power again when pushing the buttons. It came on again the next day but the day after it is out again. Any ideas? I usually fix my own applliances but I am limited with this digital instruments system. I will appreciate any help, Mark

Yup, this is what happened to me. I also get a "44" error code and erroneous beeping. This is exactly what the class action law suit was about. The Whirlpool Calypso's of your type have the red LED and touch controls, right? They go bad internally after a few years, regardless of how much or how little you use them. There is nothing you can do. Order a new or reconditioned control panel, or have it serviced and repaired by a qualified company referred by Whirlpool Service... Don't do this yourself... The part is about $200 or so plus $60 to $80 minimum call out charge, and sometimes the new parts are as bad as the one you currently have. Best Bet... Time to upgrade to something newer. You may spend your money on this repair, yet in a few months, have the same thing again or something else go wrong. It's just not worth the repair.... Indy :)

I ran a self diagnostic test on my Whirlpool calypso washer and got CA error code. Do I need to replace the drive motor?

If a status signal comes back from the motor controller that a current limit has been breached, the unit will return to standby mode and display either CA for average current limit trip or Cl for instantaneous current limit trip.
Before replace, I would first check the power supply, wiring and electronic.

Where do you locate the model number on a whirlpool calypso?

The model number on Whirlpool manufactured top loaders is usually printed on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid.

Whirlpool Calypso Mod: GVW9959KQ2, stops and shows "ob" as code for fast final spin. Also making high pitched whine during wash cycle. Appl svce place has suggested bearing or xmission. Any possible...

Sorry to say but they are right. The Calypso washer was a horible design given to whirlpool from maytag. I would suggest you go buy new machine. Buy someting that looks simple and easy to use. The more complicated the unit the more problems you will have down the road.

My Whirlpool calypso top loading washer poured water from underneath, water everywhere, what do I do and how do I do it?? No codes showed up. Thanks for any info. Rose

Sounds like the seals & gaskets have failed. If you removed the wash plate trying to unjam the washer and did not also replace the gasket kit, you may have violated the integrity of the water tight seals. However, sometimes also the fabric softener dispenser especially, gets clogged and may overflow and leak if the tubes are clogged with coagulated fabric softener. As I am writing this, my washer's fabric softener dispenser is clogged and the method I use to clear it has not worked this time - a cup of boiling water to melt the congealed fabric softener. One has to open the top lid (method varies by Calypso model - Whirlpool or Kenmore) to get to the dispenser tubing and reservoir underneath to get things flowing again, and in fact I have a small water leak on the floor where the dispenser overflowed a bit. That you have a leak, if it happens to come from such a clog, at least gives you a sign that your dispenser solenoids are not malfunctioning, requiring replacement of one of the circuit boards.

I had the same problem, it turned out to be the "U-Joint", which was a fairly easy repair. The part comes as a kit, (It is probably very common), the cost I got from Sears was $112. With tax and a $44 overnight delivery charge, my total was $170. And while I had it apart, I also cleaned all the gunk out.

Whirlpool Calypso washer (model #gvw9959kl2) selector buttons

Afraid to say that there is no reset on these washers, and the problem is probably the touch pad board in the console has gone bad.  Usually not a cheap repair.  The part is usually between $200.00 and $350.00 depending on what part of the country you live in.  Hope this helps you, but that sure seems to be the problem.  Let me know if you need further information.  Good Luck!!!!!!    Jim
