I am using a 30D with a 17-85 lense, recently when I attempt to take a long range shot the camera/lense will not lock in and focus. The lense will move back in forth and unable to lock on a focal point. I have tested and it is only happening on long shots, if I zoom in on say an item 25-50 feet away it is fine but when I go outside that range it cannot get focused.
-   No matter what lens I attach, my canon 30D auto focus is unreliable. We sent it to be "cleaned", and it worked for a few weeks without a problem, but now it is back to the same old tricks. It's extremely annoying, particularly when you need to focus on something quickly or in low light. Any other suggestions?

-   My Canon EOS 30D has the same issue - often 'searches' for correct focus, especially in low-light/high ISO situations. About 50% of my photos are out of focus just enough to be really frustrating when shot in AF mode.

-   I'm having the same problem. And the 30D back focuses in AF. Fully frustrating!-   Ldarter
Change from auto focus to manual focus or focus using only one focal square and change the setting to One Shot. You may need to shoot in Manual (M) mode though. Any of the "auto" modes will not let you.

Same thing, all images are extremely over-exposed. When using flash, however, exposure is (more or less) OK, so I figure the flash metering does not rely on the same mechanism. Anyone got a clue on how to get to the AE sensor? The location pepeik posted (thanks for that!) does not exactly suggest a way of getting there.
