New Sony MDR-DS6500 wireless headphones. Tried every variation of optical/digital and analog output/input. Preferred would be optical digital Samsung HD TV with audio return channel out from Sony BDV-HZ970W home Theater HDMI input to headphone transmitter. No sound from the headphones, just the faint "beep" indicated in the manual for troubleshooting. Talked with Sony Support, tried everything including turning of home theater S-Air remote speakers, Apple Airport 2.4G devices, still no sound. Any suggestions besides returning to Sony defective?

Simple test plugging unit into laptop, switching unit to analog, playing iTunes proves unit is defective. If I can get it replaced under warranty, the intent would be to opt digital cable it to Samsung Return Audio Channel Output. Please confirm that way I should be able to get both TV/HT HDMI audio as well as Rogers HDTV DVR live as well as recorded signals thru-put to TV via HT. Then there is the issue of muting the HT/TV speakers while using the Headphones. If that is not possible, there is no point in using the Headphones! Hoping that the Opt Digital TV output operates independently of the muted HDMI audio output. If not, I think Sony owes me a complete refund! Any advice?

  • rxkeenan Sep 11, 2011

It should definitely work directly linked to the DVR opt digi output by passing the HT, and I'm hoping maybe the TV opt digi output audio return channel signal is also independent of the HT muting function, unless you know for sure it is not. Otherwise I think Sony owes me a refund, not an exchange, since the reason I bought the headphones was for the opt digi input, knowing the Sony HT had no outputs but the speakers and I would have to rely on the two alternatives outlined above! Your help much appreciated!

  • rxkeenan Sep 11, 2011

Not sure you received my earlier reply. Try again: Direct opt/dig connection from DVR OUT to Headphone IN bypassing HT should certainly work for TV and DVR recordings. Hoping that opt/dig TV OUT from HT HDMI audio return channel direct to Headphone IN may also work, bypassing HT, and hoping that OUT is independent of HT muting function unless you know for sure this is not the case. Otherwise I think Sony owes me a refund since I bought this unit only because the Sony HT has no outputs but for the speakers! Your help most appreciated!

  • rxkeenan Sep 11, 2011

Well, I've got several "high end" HT receivers, just not the space to install them in the small apt application in question, hence the need to make work the compact Sony HT with wireless Headphones..

My final hope is that Anynet+HDMI/CEC Sony HT to Anynet+Samsung Smart TV PN51D6500 Audio Return Channel will output opt/dig audio signal to Sony Wireless Headphones with Sony HT muting function.

Any final input most welcome before I go back to Sony with my case.

    Thanks for all the help!

I've checked all the connections, settings, the battery charge and read both the TV and the Headphone's manuals. I am at a loss figuring out the problem.

Simple test to see if the unit is functional: get a cable like
http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Male-Cable-ft/dp/B002T4OMG8
plug it in the headphones output from your pc or whatever device which you know it works since you are using it with other regular headphones (even a phone will do) and see if you hear something. If you don't then it's defective, if you hear then the problem is with your HT.
The biggest one is the fact that the only way in which this HT is capable of delivering sound to another unit is thru the wireless S-Air connection which the wireless module from the headphones doesn't support - it can connect strictly only to the module from its base which accepts only cabled connections, which your HT doesn't have..
To put it simply there is no way to connect this headphones to this HT. If you want to use those headphones you will need to get a real receiver and use this HT strictly as an BR player.

No, that won't work simply because your HT doesn't have an optical output so there's no way to hook your headphones to it. On top of that the muting will definitely won't work since this HT doesn't have signal routing capabilities since it's a simple, low end, very basic HT For what you need a separate receiver is mandatory - and for it to have the audio return feature it will have to be a good one, almost high-end.

  • Azrael SRL Sep 11, 2011

Yes, plugged directly it would work - but you would need to manually mute the other speakers and manually switch the optical cable from source to source every time you would want to use it. Very awkward and it will damage the optical outputs very quickly. And once that happens the repair will cost a lot more than a good receiver.

  • Azrael SRL Sep 12, 2011

No, that can't be done because , as i said, the Sony HT doesn't have routing capability - it can accept the sound from the tv but it can't extract it and pass it to the headphones.

There is a volume control on this headphone which is somewhat difficult to locate. Rotate it to get the required sound level.

I have a Yamaha RX-v1800 amplifier. Need help connecting a Bluetooth music receiver

To connect the Bluetooth music receiver to your Yamaha RX-V1800 amplifier, you will need to use one of the available input options on the amplifier. The Yamaha RX-V1800 should have various audio input ports, and the specific connection method will depend on the output options provided by your Bluetooth music receiver. Here are the general steps to connect the receiver:
  1. Identify the audio output options of the Bluetooth music receiver: Check the output ports of the Bluetooth receiver and determine what type of connection it supports. Common output options include:
    • 3.5mm headphone jack (analog)
    • RCA (analog)
    • Optical (digital)
  2. Choose the corresponding input on the Yamaha RX-V1800: Depending on the output options of the Bluetooth music receiver, you need to select the appropriate input on the amplifier. The Yamaha RX-V1800 should have various input options, such as:
    • AUX (usually a 3.5mm stereo input)
    • CD (analog RCA input)
    • DVD/BD (analog RCA input)
    • OPTICAL (digital optical input)
  3. Connect the Bluetooth music receiver to the amplifier: Use the appropriate cable or adapter to connect the output of the Bluetooth music receiver to the selected input on the Yamaha RX-V1800. Here's how to do it based on the different output and input options:a. If the Bluetooth receiver has a 3.5mm headphone jack (analog output) and the Yamaha amplifier has an AUX input (3.5mm stereo input), use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable to connect them.
    b. If the Bluetooth receiver has RCA outputs (analog) and the Yamaha amplifier has corresponding RCA inputs (CD or DVD/BD), use an RCA cable (red and white connectors) to connect them.
    c. If the Bluetooth receiver has a digital optical output and the Yamaha amplifier has an optical input, use a digital optical cable to connect them.
  4. Set the input source on the amplifier: Once the Bluetooth receiver is physically connected to the amplifier, you'll need to select the corresponding input source on the Yamaha RX-V1800. Use the amplifier's remote control or front panel to select the input source you connected the Bluetooth receiver to (e.g., AUX, CD, DVD, OPTICAL, etc.).
  5. Pair and play: Turn on the Bluetooth function on your iPhone, put the Bluetooth receiver into pairing mode, and pair it with your iPhone. Once paired, you should be able to play your music from the iPhone, and the audio will be transmitted to the Yamaha RX-V1800 amplifier for playback.
Please note that the specific labels of the inputs on your Yamaha RX-V1800 might differ slightly from what I've mentioned, but the general concept of connecting the Bluetooth music receiver remains the same. Always refer to your amplifier's user manual for the exact location and naming of the input ports.

How do I hook up a tv to a Sony D311 receiver

The Sony STR-D311 only has analog audio inputs. If your TV has an analog audio output, use the appropriate RCA cable (2 M/M plugs on each end, usually red and white). If your TV has a headphone jack, use a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter. However, if your TV only has digital audio outputs, you will need a digital to analog audio converter, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Analog-audio-converter/dp/B004C4WPXA . You will also need the appropriate analog audio and digital audio cables.

The manual for the receiver is on the product support page: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-find.pl?mdl=STRD311 . The direct link to the manual is currently https://docs.sony.com/release//STRD311.PDF .

I hope this helps.

I have recently purchased SONY MDR-DS6500 wireless headphones. Wireless transmitter have two inputs (1) Audio In : Optical Digital Input (2) Analog Stereo Input mini jack. I would like to hook it up to my...

Its all about the quality of the converter in the Headphone unit.

If the quality is lower than the quality of the converter in the receiver, then using the head jack is a better idea. Since there is more room, power, and money going into the receiver, it may be better

I do not believe that there is a cheap way to connect to the headphone with optical audio

The only way to be sure though, is to test it and see. Connect your computer to the receiver with HDMI, play audio through, and compare it to when you just connect your computer to the headphones, via optical audio

How do I use headphones with this model

The unit does not have a headphone output or a provision for headphones. An option will be connecting headphones or wireless headphones that have a digital optical input to the digital optical output of the TV. The TV speakers should be off in order for the output to work.

Need hookup instructions (sound)

I can't find a manual for that particular model but there's not a wgole lot of variation among CD players. The back will probably have 1 or more of the following:

analog RCA stereo pair Line Out
digital coaxial output
digital optical output

Standard stuff.

For digital audio conenct the appropriate digital output to a compatible digital input on a receiver or other digital audio device.

The Line Out is vanilla analog audio. Conenct it to any Line Level input except PHONO.

We just bought a viore 19" class lcd and can't figure out how to hook up our new sony wireless MDR-RF925RK RF headphones so that one person can hear the tv and no one else can hear the sound.

After doing some searching for the TV you mentioned, it appears it doesn't have any outputs to plug the headphones. Website says it only has inputs. You would need a monitor or a fixed audio out for this to function as you wish. Sorry.

Wireless headphone connection to multiple components?

Cat,    Splitting an optical output is not recommended.  In fact it would require an optical patch bay, which would be overkill. You could use the headphone output on the front of the Denon AVR3805.    Because this output is behind a door it might be a cleaner looking set up to use the optical output on the top left looking at the back of the unit.  Because those two optical outputs are labeled "optical 3 and 4" they are zone outputs, they should work without having to "map" or patch them internally. The outputs here will be controlled independently as zones from the receiver's remote.      The easiest option looks to be the analog "pre output" located in the middle of the back of the receiver.  The left-most two rca jacks you want to use are labeled "front" and are white over red.  This output will work fine.  Control of the volume will be from the headphone unit and not the receiver.
