Question about Emerson EWC1303 13 in. TV/VCR Combo
The sound and picture come on good for about 5-10 seconds and then the set shuts off.
I've seen problems like this with 2 tv/vcr combo sets before. in my case each time the sensors in the machine think there's a tape jammed, and it shuts down to prevent damage. if tihs is what's going on it should actually say onscreen that it's trying to eject a tape, whether there's one in or not.
WARNING: this fix may get the tv working again, but the vcr will not be usable.
if this is what you're seeing then step one would be to remove the tape (assuming there's one there at all), now turn it back on and see that: THIS DIDN'T FIX ANYTHING! that's where step 2 comes in, you need to probe around a bit, in my case this was very much a trial and error thing, and find which mechanical parts are in the wrong positions. you want everything in the position it should be with a tape ejected. with this done you should be able to turn the tv on without getting the eject message and having the tv turn off.

I have one of these with the "shut off" problem..... sprayed some compressed air, like for computer keyboards and stuff, through the VCR door and she started working.... must have been some dust in the wrong spot,,,,

This problem is more than likely a defected mode switch! Disassemble the vcr, take mode swith apart and lightly sand contacts and clean pathway where the contacts ride with a cotton swab and alcohol, then reassemlbe.

Tv goes off because it detects there is a problem in internal circuits, goes in protected mode., and activates an internal safety switch to turn tv off.
Try first unplugging power cable for twenty minutes, see if this clears the problem.
If it does not work it means it is an internal problem, probably a faulty component of a short.
If you want to call a repairman you can use the phone number listed in the user manual.
