Hello Let_g,
Everyone will have their preferences, so expect more than a few answers to this. Knowing more about yourself and your habits will help find the perfect machine for you.
The first thing you need to ask yourself is what your main uses are going to be. Try answering some of these questions:
Do you travel a lot, or will just tend to set yourself up in a few odd places?
Do you play a lot of PC games or movies?
Do you tend to beat up what you own, or are you cautious with your stuff?
Do you like a lot of bells and whistles, or do you prefer something straightforward and simple?
Do you have any particular vision problems?
That aside, my most general advice for anyone looking for a laptop is to simply be sure to get one with a graphics card in some form. Look for something that advertises Nvidia or ATI graphics, and avoid other stuff like "Intel graphics media accelerator", which isn't really a card at all. The reason I say that is that I often find that graphics ability is one of the biggest bottlenecks in a laptop that is not really upgradable in the future. If you get a laptop with a solid graphics card, then most of the other features you need or want should fall into place. At $700-900, you're at the perfect price point.
I can get you specific models with answers to the above questions (I'll check back later). Otherwise, I'm personally inclined to recommend either hp or dell machines, though neither are at the quality they were a couple years back.
I also recommend keeping an eye on sites like Dealhack or Dealigg to find good deals or coupons, and get the most bang for your buck.

In regard to technical problems with the dv series (not just the dv2000,) a very high number of machines have had issues resulting in the motherboard needing a replacement. I used to own a dv9000, and it happened to me. The primary issue, though, was with Nvidia, and it also affected a number of other manufacturers with a certain chipset. Not much could be done about it, and it wasn't hp's fault. Now is just a good time to avoid buying used.
Just recently, I replaced my dv9000 with a tx2500. While I greatly enjoyed the 17" screen and the full keyboard on the 9000, it was always a bit of a pain to carry around. between the two I would recommend going with the current 2000 series, as you maintain the portability, and you could always buy a bigger screen to keep at home (that's my current plan.) Better yet, go with the 4000 series if you can find a deal or spare a few extra dollars, as it supports the Nivida Geforce 9200M graphics card, and the extra power boost is a definite plus.
Go with the 9000 series only if you don't want to be bothered with buying a bigger screen, and you rarely plan on moving it around or going to the local coffeehouse with it.
