OK, the delivery seems fine because there is devintely lots more toner in the (long unit that slides into the printer), the one that gathers all the toner. When i turn the roller by hand (and it gets covered in magnetized toner) then print, the first print comes out with a little bit of toner ont eh nedge but nothing else. Do you think there is a fault with the unit.. or maybe some sort of motor? does the same motor turn all the units?

I got this printer from where my dad used to work and my friends and i all use it for university.

    Cheers, Stefan.

Excellent, so i need to remove the clutch from the mangeta... and first swap it with one of the other colours (i imagine the clutch is screwed in somewhere at the back of the scanner (inside obviously). Then return the dev and toner units to their origional locations and print, hopefully the yellow will stop printing, and the red will start again.

I imagine that if the red still does not work and the colour that i replace the clutch with still works then the problem will be with either the magenta toner or dev unit?

I will be ok playing around with it, please could you send me the link to the manual to remove and swap the clutch. (I have one service manual.. not sure its in there)

Hi there, is the control box the circuit board at the bottom, or the bit where all the ports plug into further up? I swung the circuit board open but cant make out which the flywheels are... im imagining top left? But not too sure and dont want to upset any gears. Also, there is quite a lot of toner down here.. mostly on the metal and not over the circuit board.. i imagine i should clean this with some compressed air?

I have not bought the service manual, will it tell me eactly how to do what youre telling me to do?

If there is toner in the cart but not getting onto the page, the most likely cause is that the toner delivery tube is blocked. You can try removing the unit and vacuuming out the supply line to remove any lumps that may be lodged and then run the forced toner supply in the Service Mode.

Hi Stefan. I was getting myself lost for a minute there. The dev unit sits next to the toner unit on the 3800 and as such there is no delivery tube.

The most likely cause for the problem is that the dev unit is not turning. This is probably NOT a motor fault, as if the motor was not turning the machine should give an SC error. Instead the system uses a motor which is constantly turning during the print process and a clutch activates to actually move drive from the spinning motor the the dev unit.

The problem is therefor likely to be that the clutch is not operating to send drive to the dev.

Now getting to the clutch requires a bit of bravery from the user and a reasonable amount of technical know-how. If you think you can manage to remove the clutch and find a replacement, then i can supply you a link to a service manual to help you get it fixed. You could prove the error by changing the clutch on magenta with one of the others. If that colour then fails and the magenta returns, then you know the clutch is at fault.

Let me know how you want to proceed.

To get at the clutch you need to remove the rear cover, swing the controller box out of the way, remove the drum gears with flywheels, and then you are about there. The service manual for the Ricoh AP3800C can be downloaded from

You really should get the service manual. It will tell you exactly what part is what and how to get to the clutches etc. Clean the toner with a vacuum, not compressed air. Last thing you want is load of carcinogenic powder floating round you!!

Ricoh AP3800C sc389 error code

SC389 is a development gamma error in the magenta. There can be several causes for this error - a toner supply problem, incorrect toner used, a laser exposure problem etc. This is not likely to be an easy problem to fix unless you are experienced in such matters, so you may need to look for someone who can help out.

Sounds like a bad clutch for the magenta unit. You can swap the clutch with one of the others (they are the same) to verify. You haveto take the controller out and sone metal panels to get to the clutches.

Do you use some very cheap generik ink?

If your ink wont match the specifications of the needed one clogging is the result.

If you have tried several cleaning there is unfurtunately nothing more what you can do: the ph is dead (for mag).

Can't color balance 2605

well, the density is actually a combination of two aspects. The original document settings, especially in color transforms. Usually, the software will have a transform specific for the printer. In my experiences, trying to tweak the printer for each print job, can cause extreme frustration. Check the software manual for settings for your printer, and perhaps you'll get closer to this solution.

I am pretty sure Sc376 is your Magenta not Cyan. try replacing your magenta developer unit and your magenta drum unit. If you buy them from a dealer you will have to buy all the colors not just magenta. Try Ebay first and search for supplies for your model.
