Maytag Wide by Side Freezer not working

Our 5 year old Wide By Side has been making noises for the last 2 or 3 days, seemed to be working fine. Yesterday the freezer wasn't as cold as it should be. We adjusted the control, turned it colder. Today everything in the freezer is thawed, and the refrigerator side is warm also. It sound like the fan is working then it buzzes and shuts off. What should we do?

The fan is still working, any other ideas?

  • BU1wife Sep 14, 2008

Checked all of those, everything seems to be running. Nothing is blocked. I opened the freezer and it is trying to cool. As soon as I shut it I heard a buzzing noise.

  • BU1wife Sep 14, 2008

The refrgerator side is warm also.

  • BU1wife Sep 14, 2008

ok dumb question, how do I get to the evaporator coils. The only thing I can remove on the back is a cover to the fan. The black tank is very hot.

  • BU1wife Sep 14, 2008

Haven't heard anything back, could you please help with my question.

    Thank You

  • BU1wife Sep 15, 2008

Thanks I'll see what I can find out.

Sounds like a defrost problem or dirty coils under the machine. Check to see if
there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not
    defrosting as it should.

    • possible causes:

    1. bad defrost timer/control board

    2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)

    3. bad thermo switch in freezer

If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice
melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if
is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above
    items.

Open the freezer panel at the back of the freezer section and check the evaporator fan, it could have been burnt.

have you seen the evaporator coil?..is it covered with frost? or ice blocked the whole evaporator?

if not, then please check the condenser fan near the compressor at the back, that could be the fan that stopped working.

    keep me posted

    tnx again,

the buzzing sound could be the evaporator fan. this fan runs as you close the door. can you test your evaporator fan by pushing the freezer door switch and watch the fan if it would run and maybe you can also find where the buzzing sound is coming from.

and alos can you describe the evaporator coils, how far can you see frost on the tubes?..is it just at the top? up to the middle portion or all of the coils has a thin film of frost?

do all the test while the refrigerator is plugged in.

    tnx again

    sorry for the delay,

you have to remove all the trays inside the freezer section and unscrew the back panel inside the freezer section.

then slide the back plate where you would see the evaporator.

that black tank is the compressor. maybe it is safe to unplug the unit first for about 4 hours to coll down the compressor.

    tnx again

It sounds like your evaporator fan motor, they last about 4-5 years. Try to see if the buzzing noise comes from the motor, usually in the freezer compartment behind a vented cover plate

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

check in the freezer side and look at the back wall and see if there is any build up of frost, your coil may be block, so no air flowing through the coil, your unit may not defrosting, you need to check the defrost heater, the defrost timer or the defrost thermostat one of these part can be defective

Regrigerator stopped, now freezer too.

It is due to the defrost timer is not working. Once it is replaced, you should be good for another year. The information is given by the repairman. I have this replaced two days ago. The MayTag part number is: 61005988.

Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is

Something has stopped the cold air being ducted from freezer side to refrigerator side of things. Possibly duct blocked due to ice build up, evaporator not self defrosting etc. Turn unit off for a few days till it melts and then turn back on. If it was because a door has been left slightly open you will be ok. If for any other reason you will want to have it serviced in the next week or so.

This sounds like you have a Maytag Ice2O. You need to find out if that cound is a relay/overoad failure on the compressor or the compressor going out. I can say from experience that some of those have a tecumsie comprossor in them and the do tend to fail. If you hear a loud electrical humming sound coming from the compressor and your getting a warm up then you need to record this sound on some kind of sound recorder and call a Whirlpool warrenty certified tech. out to look at it if it's less than 5 years old from perchase date then Whirlpool will pick up the part and labor bill of a compressor installation also check your owners manual for warrenty details. Hit me up let me know.

5 year old Maytag Wide by Side Refrigerator side not cooling

Same issue with my 6 yr old Maytag side-by-side model #MSD2756GEW. Turned out it was caused by a faulty circuit board. This circuit board is located in the upper right fridge section. Apparently these boards are sensitive to power surges (which we have here in central Texas from time to time.) When the circuit board is fried, it makes a noise like a fan blade malfunctioning and it stops the auto defrost feature in the freezer from working. So the freezer ices up at the back, and the ice prevents the cold air from reaching the fridge section.

Our circuit board (which we thought was a fan) made ominous noises for a few months. (The noise would last only a minute or so and stop shortly after we opened a door). Eventually we noticed that the fridge wasn't as cold and the freezer had snow in it. Finally the board stopped making noise and about a week or so afterward we noticed that the milk had spoiled and the fridge wasn't very cold. The food in the freezer side pretty solidly frozen, thankfully.

In addition to replacing the circuit board, the fridge had to be de-iced or it would not work properly. I put it all frozen into a large camping cooler where it stayed for several hours. I opened the freezer doors and put table fan and pointed a hobby light which gets quite hot, at the back of the freezer. Within 3 hours, the ice had melted significantly so I could see through the grate at the back of the freezer. This really great technician named Tracy, made a special trip to the parts store to get the circuit board and came back within a couple hours, bringing with him a steamer. He removed the back panel inside the freezer section (the coils are behind there) and used the steamer to melt the rest of the ice before he left.

Tracey, who works for a local appliance repair company, told me that about 4 years ago, Maytag started making their fridges with built-in surge protection, so the circuit boards apparently don't get fried on the newer models as they do on my 6 yr old model. He recommended that we put plug the fridge into a heavy-duty surge protector - which we are definitely going to do.
