    I need to reformat the Kingston 2GB flash drive because when I saved some files on a computer running Mac OS9 the files seemed to be translated to PC format.  I wish to reformat the drive so it will work with Mac but the software on the Mac won't let me do so.

    P.S. This is a work related computer.  I personally HATE Mac's!

I am assuming you double left click on it in the "my computer" folder. try right clicking on it and selecting "open"

You may have formatted the drive in NTFS instead of FAT32. if its an old version of Xp or Win98 then it may need to be formatted in FAT32. If its windows 7 then it must be in NTFS. in My computer right click on the icon for the drive and left click on format. You should see the options for with type of file system you want.

Good luck

Cant open. it asks whether to format. important data is there in disk

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.

HOE TO FORMAT DATE TRAVELER

The simplest way to format a Flash Drive or a Pendrive is to format it from the My Computer without using any commands. Let's assume you are doing it on a Computer (Pc Desktop). Follow the instructions;
1. Connect you Data Traveler on one of the Usb port of your computer, and wait for few minutes.
2. After you know that it's been detected by the computer, open "My Computer" then right-click on the Data Traveler's Drive Icon e.g. Removable Disk (K:), etc.. and select "Format"

3. When the format dialog box is opened, click "Start" and then you'll be prompted with a warning message to confirm the proceed, click "Ok" to proceed. Formatting Dialog box bf3d566.jpg

4. Wait for few seconds and you'll get another message that the drive has been successfully formatted.

You can't format without loosing data. You should get a professional data recovery company to look at the drive. http://techrxgb.com is my recommendation.

The directory is corrupted and unreadable

The most common cause of this is removing the USB drive without clicking "Safely remove hardware" in the task bar. Especially if data is being written to the drive, this can result in corrupt files and may make the drive unusable.

I'm sorry to say the data may be unrecoverable--ALWAYS make backups!

Two things to try before you write-off the data as lost forever.

One: Try booting the computer in SAFE mode and see if you can pull files off the USB Drive--you may have to give the drive administrative privileges.

Two: Download and run the trial version of the BadCopy data recovery program at this link:

http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/

To make the drive usable again, find it in My Computer, RIGHT click on it and click "Format." The choose "Quick" format. A quick format should make it usable again.

If the BadCopy program could find no files to recover: After the quick format, you may be able to pull some of the files off simply in windows. If not, run BadCopy again: It just may find some files after the quick format.

A full format erases ALL data which may remain on the drive. Only use quick format if you expect to recover anything.

Good Luck!

Transcend Usb says please insert a disc when i try to open

PatKam covered the basics,

Couple other things to check. You may have been clicking the wrong removable drive. If you have a camera, MP3 player or have a media card reader in your computer they can all show up as "Removable Device" but will give you that message if you try to open them without a chip in them.

When you look in My Computer if there is more than one removable drive listed you may have to use the guess and check method trying each to see if that's the USB drive.

If you are sure you're looking at the right drive and still getting that message then refer to Pat's message above and try data recovery software for a DIY solution or send it to a company like Armor-IT Data Recovery which is listed in the directory of FixYa or can be found by searching their name on google.

Hope one of these ideas helps out,

Chris

How to format a pen drive?

I know about this problem and the solution.

First, you should know your pen drive is infected with a virus. You can't usually repair it, you'lll just have to format it, and I'm getting to that.

Now, Before you format the pen drive, you might want to preserve some files in the drive?

Instead of trying to view the pen drive by double clicking or right click=>open TYPE the ASSOCIATED DRIVE LETTER at the RUN DIALOG BOX (start=>run)

Eg:
If your pen drive is assigned to drive E:
Start=>Run
Type "E:" (without quotes) and hit enter.
It should open.

Now you will probably see some weired .exe file, probably named fun.exe. That's the virus. You just cant delete it. BUT you can copy the rest of the imprtant files to your hard drive.

TO FORMAT
Start=>Run
type "cmd" (without qoutes) and hit enter
type "format/x E:" (without qoutes and mind your spellings and spacing. REPLACE "E:" with the associated drive letter of the pen drive)
Hit enter.

Hope my info fixes your problem,
Thanx for using fixya.
