I have a similar problem, unit not used since September 2008, now will not find any satellites. Self test all ok.   I know software updates were made available from time to time, last updated in 2004 by previous owner.

I have a old raymarine c80 navigation sometimes it gives me a fix when i turn it on and sometimes it will not. Do i need a new antenna if so what kind.

The issue is related to the antenna, either bad connection, low voltage or faulty gps. Start by checking the voltage supplied to the antenna (most probably through SeaTalk from the plotter), if you find this to be 11V or bellow - beef it up by adding external 12V. You can also check the wiring, if all looks ok - it is time to get a new gps antenna. Raymarine has a retrofit pack for the new RS130 which also includes SeaTalk ng converter. With some luck it's only the power...

Ais and 1920c Furuno chart plotter

n the system setup, under “UNITS” I set BEARING to “MAG” (magnetic). This will cause the unit to display course / bearing information in relation to the Magnetic North and match magnetic compass readings. It is not the same as True North! One has to be careful with this setting. There are a number of areas where the earth's magnetic field is locally disturbed, sometimes very significantly. Your GPS may not account for it. - again, under “UNITS” I set “METRIC”.

Gps antenee not recieving signals

please do check the terminal connector of the gps to the antenna
connector cable there should be is a voltage reading of 5 volt dc on the gps using a multitester.if the answer is no then your gps receiver
is out of order.if 4 volt to almost 5volt that should be
be ok..next step is to check the gps antenna cable connector
to the gps antenna using multitester a for short or open connection.set the tester to x1 and calibrate setting then test
short cable should reading full almost zero on the scale, open has almost
no resistance at all.a good gps antenna will read a difference
of forward and reverse resistance reading i cannot tell u the actual reading
of the antenna because it all depend on the length of the cable
and the gps antenna model.but it usually work if u test it this way
please do take note that u are very sure of your setting on the
gps it self before u make this test.
good luck

No gps signal

First of all it's suppose to be a 1 year warranty, at least it is here in Australia.

My GPS stopped working recently, after trying to install updates, I found that by resetting the factory settings it started working again. This may help, but mine was not knocked though, so you may have damaged the antenna.

Can't find satellites

The internal antenna BNC connection (the little steel bayonet that the secures the antenna or extender cable) is a common failure on these units. The threaded retaining ring on the outside of the antenna BNC comes loose when installing/removing the antenna connection, and eventually the BNC rotates and the solder joint inside fails. This happened on mine recently, if you are handy fixing small mechanical parts and a good solderer it is pretty  easy to fix. Remove the batteries, remove all six outer case screws (but not the one with the oval metal plate) and gently pull the housing apart. Check the solder connection of the coax wire to the BNC pin & shield. If it's broken and the BNC is loose in the GPS case, tighten the outer BNC retaining ring VERY tight, add a drop of thin super glue (Hot Stuff or Permabond CyA, etc) to keep the ring/BNC/case mated, then repair the coax solder  connection. Replace all the screws and test it outside. If it's an aviation GPS you would of course have this done by an FAA licensed avionics specialist. Wink wink.

Details on the philips ap navigator F 440.

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure. I hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Philips navigator MK8 Gps antenna is showing good but no update. Red light continualy flashes indicating wrong date and time. Can you help

Hi Johnsue05

pls. check the signal to noise ratio of the antenna signal. Sea page 23 and 24 of this manual:

http://www.prokyon.dk/download/manualer/AP%20MK8%20MK9%20Installation%20manual.pdf

If the signal to noise ratio is low, the GPS may have a bad antenna, cable connection or a defective antenna.

If you have performed a cold start (i.e. changed the backup batterie) you have to wait for 2-3 hours until der GPS has downloaded the almanach information.

Hope this helps.
