check the website of your printer such as if its a Lexmark go to lexmark.com and see if the model number is compatable with the Vista programming. A lot of printers do not operate with Vista. I have three printers that only operate with XP and Windows 7
You need a new driver from Dell that funtions with Vista. If you have Vista X64 OS then this function may not be available for a while longer as the driver for the scanner is still in development. There is a significant difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit OS.
I'm running into networking problems with my Vista X64 OS and a printer on my home network that connects through XP Pro on a desktop computer with a 32-bit OS.
A Windoze Vista 32-bit laptop has no problems with this printer.
Windows Vista" is your operating system. I would start by uninstalling (undoing) any of the printer software that you have installed, and try again. It sounds like at this point that you may have bits and pieces of both 'XP' and 'Vista' drivers installed. Your link is pointing to the right page at Dell, just select the "driver" under the windows Vista tab. I'm not sure how that software will be packaged, But I assume that it is self installing once you download it. You just click on it to start the installation. Usually you will leave you USB cable to the printer unplugged until after the installation, and then you are prompted to plug it in. I'm not sure if this will help, but it's difficult to know exactly what you have done to this point.
If your laptop is running Vista and your old desktop was running XP and the disk you got with your printer had drivers that worked with XP and Vista is not listed on them, it would be a case of incompatibility. You would need to go to the Dell website to download updated drivers for Vista if they are not of the standard Vista driver package. (The driver model changed between XP and Vista making XP drivers incompatible with Vista.)
