Wifi is a connection that is wireless. you don't need to connect your laptop directly to your router using ETHERNET cable so you can access the internet anywhere in your house

I'm assuming this is a new laptop. What you are looking for is a small slide switch. I don't know what laptop you have so can't tell you exactly where this switch is. Generally they are along the front edge or the side edges of the case but have seen one under the display near the hinges. If you look at your owners manual for the picture that shows what all the parts and buttons are, this will show you where it is. There is usually a a series of pictures ie front side back etc so you might have to look at a few before finding where it is. when you do find it just slide it on. Your WiFi hardware is now turned on. Laptops come with this disabled and even if you know this it can take several rather annoying minutes to find the stupid switch.
Once it is on it should be able to connect to any WiFi. You may have to setup security or passwords for some networks but the WiFi should be working at this point.
If your problem turns out to be the hardware ie the WiFi needs more than just being turned on, then please post with more details including your model number etc.

Anyway, although it seems to be highly improbable that you keep facing this issue, go to 'Start > Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Network Adapters tab', and make sure that the My network card connect to:' dropdown menu is set to 'The internet'. If it is three days old and no wifi you may not want to read this...;-]
There is a off on switch for the wifi either in front or along the side of the case. By default it is off. The wifi will show installed and working but won;t do anything. The hard part is finding that stupid switch. Followed by pretending you knew it was the problem all along. I'm chuckling at this as everyone myself included has done this. If it is anything other than the switch on a 3 day old laptop I'd put in in the box and return it.
you must have a wifi driver check it device manager goto start --> my computer -->right click then properties goto hardware tab check for your wifi driver is installed... find the yellow question mark... then try to install it...some wifi have a security you need to know the security code... ex. wep.. etc,.
