Thanx AndrewWro for the quick response. Unfortunately no the system does not display anything. Also I have to admit I have not only used factory dvds but also self made ones.I am sorry for the dumb question but what is a drive and where do I get one. I purchased the product at Conns and would rather not go there again. Also I am trying a cd on the dvd slot and it does function am also trying a dvd again I hear it spinning but you also hear like a needle for lack of a better word kind of scratching is that normal? Neighbor advised to remove the outer box of the server good idea or not for someone not to familiar with this?

I'm assuming the system says that there is no disc and you've tried factory DVDs (self made ones can have intermittent results on different burners).

If that is the case, this is probably a problem with the drive's DVD laser. There are two different lasers in most (probably all) combo drives. One for CDs and one for DVDs. You need a new drive.

The drive is a the CD/DVD drive in your computer. I found a computer like yours on Amazon and is says you have a Dual Layer multi-format CD/DVD drive.

This part is really easy to replace but I get the impression that you might be uncomfortable doing it. I would recommend that you bring the computer to a shop. It shouldn't cost too much (less than $100 and more like $50-$75).

If you want to do it your self, figure out how to open your case. Typically in modern computers, one side will slide off towards the back and then the front bezel (all the plastic) on the front will pop off. You don't always have to remove the front but sometimes you do. You will see the DVD drive exposed.

That a look at the drive (where you put the DVD). It will have a power connector (red, black, yellow, white wires - or some combination) and one other cable. If it is flat and about 2" wide, this is PATA. If it is about 1/2 wide it is SATA. Given the age of you computer, I'd bet money on PATA. Newegg is a reputable computer parts retailer just order this drive at $27 and swap it with your old one (typically 4 screws but sometimes special attachments). If it's SATA just do a search for DVD SATA and look for a drive with high marks that has a + and a - in front of RW. Good Luck.

Toshoba tv/dvd combo. won't play many dvd's. makes clicking sound as it tries to load movie?

Dear Lesley!
It looks, like your DVD lens might get contaminated with dust and/or dirt, which is being picked up off DVDs. Let's try to load music CD, instead or DVD. If it loads well, I will suggest, that your DVD player is at fault and you must give up using it. External basic DVD players are quite inexpensive and easy to connect to your TV. But: if no CD, nor DVD load, the solution might be much simpler: use lens cleaner CD with brushes. good ones might even have a special fluid, which applied to brushes(alcohol based). Just load it into your TV's player and follow audible directions. After couple attempts, your lens should be clean enough to play DVDs. Please, don't try to use any "ear swabs", instead. The lengths is not long enough, plus it may damage load mechanism or get stuck inside. I've seen such a cases lately.
Good luck,
Thank you,

Pioneer dvd r/rw wont play a dvd

If your computer recognizes a disc in the drive and operates normally, Id assume you would need a DVD player or codec to be able to actually watch the DVD. PowerDVD rings a bell.
Have you tired that? I know Windows Media Player by default wont let you watch a movie without first downloading a codec.

Do you mean DVD movies wont play? If so you need to install DVD software. Use Google to search for some or buy some e.g. PowerDVD.
