Initial Setup flashing on and off

The "Initial Setup" auto program screen keeps flashing on and off intermittantly, more and more frequently (no matter what you try to do to stop it), until the remote is disabled. Pushing buttons on TV itself only temporarily helps problem.

Initial Setup constantly flashing on KV-32FS200.
Remote and front panel buttons are locked out except, volume and input.

    I have tried:
Powered on / off - unplugged from power.
Let the Auto program run through it's sequence.

    Initial Setup flashes on an off;

when I try to let the autoprogramming run through, it stops at a different channel everytime: channel 25, 74, 80, et cetera.

tried new batteries in the remote

    powering on/off

    unplugging tv

    still not solved.

I have the same problem as Sonya, I have had some luck by unpluging the television overnite, it will stop flashing for about 4 to 6 hours.

Initial stup keeps flashin on and off, now all the buttons are locked off including the frint panel on the TV

Auto on and off keep blinking for me too. I haven't tried unplugging overnight, but I will give that a shot. I have run the auto set-up and that helps for a short time.

EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS SONYA, EXCEPT THAT DISABLING REMOTE MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. UNPLUGGING TV DOESN'T WORK EITHER. BUT UNLIKE HER PROBLEM MY TV MAY ACTUALLY WORK FINE FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND THEN START ACTING UP AGAIN.

  • jaymz9mm Aug 03, 2008

This has been happening for me over about 3 of the 4 years I've owned this TV. It seems to happen in bursts - it works fine for weeks, even months, then it freaks out. It gets to the point where I feel like it's messing with me. The initial setup will popup asking me to press channel up or down. Sometimes it goes away before my finger touches the remote. Sometimes it disappears right before I hit the channel button which is infuriating. I'll run the setup but it will flash again seconds later.

I recommend giving it a swift smack on the top near the back, that seemed to fix it once ;) In all seriousness though, I feel like it has something to do with a lot of dust getting sucked into the back of it, and smacking it would probably knock that loose if that were the issue.

INITIAL SETUP BOX KEEPS APPEARING ON SCREEN. CAN NOT STOP IT FROM REAPPEARING. IS IT WORTH HAVING A SERVICE TECH LOOK AT IT OR JUST SCRAP IT AND GET ANOTHER BRAND TELEVISION? (DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAN)

  • Anonymous Sep 10, 2008

Same issue, initial set up keeps popping up, had tv for 5 years, just started acting up within last 3 months. Getting very frustated. Tried unplugging overnight, redoing set up etc. still having issues. Would not like to spend too much to repair, would rather put towards new tv. Have other sony products, never had any issues, this is a first with me and a Sont product. Emailed sony tech support, no use, they want you to call for technician to come out to look at or bring in.

INITIAL SET UP BOX KEEPS POPPING UP AT TIMES, WILL STAY OR OR FLASH ON/OFF. TRIED UNPLUGGING, CHECKING REMOTE, USED OTHER SONY REMOTE. GETTING VERY FRUSTRATING! T.V. IS 5 YEARS OLD, STARTED ACTING UP LAST 3 MONTHS. SONY STATES I WOULD HAVE TO CALL A SONY TECHNICIAN TO LOOK AT T.V OR BRING IN (NO WAY) TOO DAMN HEAVY. WOULD RATHER REPLACE THEN TO PUT A LOT INTO IT TO REPAIR. Have had a lot of sony products, 1st time with any issues.

I too have this problem. At first plugging/unplugging was successful, but not anymore.

Sounds like a defect inherent in this Sony product. Perhaps Sony can be convinced to repair due to initially defective design?

  • jwarfi Dec 08, 2008

I have the same problem. Frustrating. I tried changing batteries in remote, unplugging, running the setup, reconnecting cable. Nothing seems to work.

  • mocha655 Dec 14, 2008

Same deal for me. I had an authorized Sony repair shop charge me $300 for a repair that only lasted 1 week. It's now back to the same "Initial Setup" screen again.

  • dgromes Mar 26, 2009

Same problem, exactly as everyone else.

  • dgromes Mar 27, 2009

I have the same problem, I contacted Sony on the web, they had me reset the TV, and so far I problem free, 1 hour. They said if that doesn't work, to unplugged the TV for 2 minutes.

Heh. I just gave my set the "Fonzie treatment" after I was convinced the initial setup notice was messing with me. The problem cleared right up. No joke.

Actually, the problem seems to be a lack of maintenance. All electronic devices have vent holes for convection cooling. These allow dust to settle on the inner modules such as circuit boards which in turn can cause short circuits to take place. Even minor ones can create annoying faults like intermittent flashing messages, as in this case. The dust needs to be either blown or vacuumed out. If you have an air compressor, just blow through the vent holes on each side of the TV cover. This corrected the fault instantly for myself.

Initial Setup Screen

Have you ever cleaned the set front glass with windex or glass cleaner.Sometimes the fluid runs down before you can wipe and lands inside right on top of the push buttons that control ( CH,VOL, MENU, etc.) If this happens you can get this trouble. If you up to it take the cover off and look at the board just under the front edge of the crt. If you see green or grey residue you probably have to remove that corresponding TAC switch. You can just cut out and use the remote for that function.

Magnavox is made by Funai. Similiar problems in another piece of equipment made by them was solved by 1) Turning off DST in the clock, or/and 2)Turning off the clocks auto update feature, ie, go to manual clock adustment. Hope this helps.

Initial setup

This is commonly caused by the CRT going too weak, and the AKG circuits are switching off the bias to the CRT. This is part of the high voltage regulation protection.

Other causes, but are rare to cause this, are failures in the bias circuits, high voltage regulation (flyback assembly), and in the scan amplifiers.

With proper experience, reference to the service manual, and the proper set-up, it is possible to determine the causes of the failure, and service it. The cost of the parts will be rather expensive if you can still have access to them.

Initial Setup flashing on and off

1) Do a hard reset = leave unplugged for 12-24 hrs , then
try again.......................................
2) What does "until the remote is disabled" mean ??

Initial setup

First give it a hard reset. To do this you must unplug the power cord for at least 4 hours; then try again.  This will reset the internal programming and restore it to factory defaults settings. Unplugging for a shorter period of time may not do the trick.

If the hard reset does not solve the problem it has a defective eeprom OR a bad voltage regulator that feeds the controller IC/eeprom set.  In which case you will need a tv tech to dignose the exact fault and determine the defective parts. (There are over 100 parts associated with these functions).

Hope this helps.
